Nepal Trek Chooser: EBC, ABC, Gokyo and Your Next Mountain

A trekker walking through the Gokyo Valley near Machhermo, beneath cloud-covered Himalayan peaks.

Compare five Nepal treks and three peak progressions by itinerary length, altitude, difficulty, accommodation and season. Find the journey that fits your experience, available time and ambitions.

Nepal field guide / checked 9 September 2026

Choose the journey.
Then choose the mountain.

Five treks. Three climbing progressions. Compare the actual itinerary behind the name, then shortlist the experience you want.

ABC and Mardi offer compact itineraries. EBC and Gokyo ask for more time at altitude. Three Passes adds repeated pass crossings. Mera, Island Peak and Lobuche East introduce technical climbing.

Duration filters compare published itinerary lengths, not safe minimums. Add international travel and disruption buffers. A shortlist is a starting point for a guide conversation.

Compare the commitment, not just the height

The graphic shows the altitude of a named objective. It is not a route maximum, sleeping-altitude chart or safety ranking. Optional Kala Patthar on EBC and viewpoints on Three Passes may be higher than the objective plotted.

Named objectives range from Mardi’s 4,120 metre viewpoint to Mera’s 6,476 metre summit target. Total example itineraries range from 8 to 22 days. Full values appear in the route cards.
Original comparison for LHO, using the linked published itineraries. Seven LHO itineraries; Three Passes uses a clearly labelled World Expeditions example. Altitudes are approximate.

How many of those days are in the mountains?

Total trip days and mountain-day blocks are different measures.
Trek / exampleTotal itineraryMountain blockWhat the block includes
Annapurna Base Camp8 days5 daysDays 2–6, consecutive walking days.
Mardi Himal9 days6 daysDays 2–7, consecutive walking days.
Everest Base Camp16 days12 daysDays 3–14 inclusive; includes two acclimatisation days.
Gokyo Lakes + Renjo La16 days12 daysDays 3–14 inclusive; includes acclimatisation and Gokyo Ri day.
Everest Three Passes22 days18 daysReference operator lists 18-day trek; days 3–20 include acclimatisation.

Blocks are counted inclusively from daily schedules. Acclimatisation days may include short walks. Climbing expeditions are excluded from this walking comparison because training, summit and reserve days are not equivalent to trek days.

The LHO perspective

Start with the experience you would miss most. If reaching Base Camp is the point, choose EBC. If the wider landscape matters more, consider Gokyo’s lakes and circuit.

Paraphrased from Rami Rasamny’s published Gokyo versus EBC comparison.

Our comparison adds a useful prompt: ask which nights, passes and skills sit behind the headline altitude. Mardi’s viewpoint and ABC are only 10 metres apart in the listed figures, yet one is a ridge viewpoint visit and the other is a base-camp overnight in these itineraries.

Original editorial synthesis for this chooser; the 10 m difference is calculated from the published ABC and Mardi itineraries, not meaningful measurement precision. It does not imply equivalent effort or altitude risk.

Progression is about skills as well as altitude

Build the walking base

Use ABC or Mardi to assess comfort with repeated walking days, simple accommodation and altitude. Their compact schedules still need preparation.

Extend the mountain commitment

EBC or Gokyo adds a longer high-altitude journey. Consider Three Passes when you already cope well with altitude, long days and variable terrain.

Choose climbing deliberately

Mera, Island Peak and Lobuche East require a separate guide assessment of altitude history, technical readiness and training. Completing a trek is not automatic qualification.

These are possible pathways, not mandatory steps or a certification ladder. Mera’s higher summit target does not make it a proxy for Lobuche East’s exposed mixed terrain. Match the skills to the route. Compare LHO’s Nepal trekking and climbing trips.

Choose a season with room for uncertainty

Spring and autumn are the main planning windows. LHO generally favours October–November for clearer trekking views, with March–May as the principal spring alternative; ABC’s current product guidance narrows spring to March–April. High passes and summit attempts need route-specific condition checks.

Winter can bring severe cold and snow; monsoon travel can bring rain, cloud and transport disruption. A month marked as suitable is not a forecast or a promise that a pass will open. Read LHO’s season guide and Nepal Tourism Board guidance.

Four questions to ask before booking

  1. Where will I sleep each night? A viewpoint altitude does not describe overnight exposure. Ask for the daily sleeping-altitude schedule and acclimatisation plan.
  2. What does “non-technical” mean here? It does not mean easy. Ask about snow, ice, exposed sections and the plan if a pass cannot be crossed.
  3. What is the accommodation actually like? Tea-house stays are simple; confirm room sharing, toilets, heating, charging and hot-water arrangements. Technical expeditions also use tents.
  4. What happens if travel is delayed? Discuss international-flight buffers, changed walking days and transport contingencies before buying flights.

Permit and guide requirements depend on the route and current implementation. Check NTB’s TIMS guidance and ask your operator to confirm every applicable permit before departure.

Methodology & sources

Checked 9 September 2026. We compared five trekking routes and three relevant LHO peak progressions. Seven rows use LHO’s standard published itineraries. Three Passes uses a 22-day World Expeditions itinerary because a corresponding live LHO trip was not verified. This is a transparent set of examples, not a representative market survey.

What is verified, and what is editorial?

Route names, itinerary days, named objective altitudes, accommodation and published seasons are attributed to the linked sources. Mountain-day blocks are reproducible counts from daily schedules. Traveller fit, trade-offs and progression advice are editorial interpretations, not measured outcomes. LHO difficulty labels are retained where available; “strenuous” for Three Passes is our descriptive category. Operator grades are not a universal scale.

How are variants and conflicting figures handled?

Standard walking returns are used; optional helicopter shortcuts are excluded. Mardi means the 4,120 m viewpoint, not the approximately 4,500 m upper base camp. Gokyo means the Renjo La circuit, not an EBC combination via Cho La. Renjo La is shown as approximately 5,360 m, following the LHO overview; its day panel lists 5,370 m. Three Passes uses the source overview’s 5,535 m for Kongma La; another section differs. These are approximate published values, not a new survey. EBC’s 5,364 m is Base Camp; optional Kala Patthar rises above 5,500 m.

What has deliberately not been scored?

No composite “best trek” score, medical risk estimate, crowd percentage, success rate, carbon estimate or cost ranking is inferred. Prices, flight operations, pass conditions and permit implementation can change. The dataset does not establish maximum sleeping altitude for every route, so no sleep-based ranking is published.
