Choosing Your First Trekking Holiday: Three Adventures to Compare

DOWNLOAD YOUR Guided Tour du Mont Blanc Trek GUIDEBOOK

Compare Tour du Mont Blanc, Alta Via 1 and Annapurna Base Camp by walking days, accommodation and preparation before building your first-trek shortlist.

Your first trekking holiday can be a meaningful challenge without being a leap into the unknown. Start with the walking you enjoy now, then compare the effort, nights and preparation each trip needs. “Beginner” might mean new to organised trekking, new to mountains or new to regular exercise; those starting points need different choices.

This shortlist is for people considering a supported multi-day trek. If you are just beginning to walk regularly, build experience locally first and discuss the preparation gap with the team. If the activity labels are unfamiliar, read hiking, trekking and mountaineering explained.

Compare three possible first treks

TripTime in the current LHO itineraryWhat may appealWhat deserves an honest check
Tour du Mont BlancEight days; six selected walking stagesA journey through three Alpine countries, with mountain huts and hotelsSustained climbs and descents; selected stages and transport rather than the full circuit entirely on foot
Alta Via 1Eight days; six walking daysDolomite scenery and a strong hut-to-hut experienceFour hut nights, repeated mountain effort and carrying essentials between specified baggage stops
Annapurna Base CampEight days; five walking daysA Himalayan teahouse journey and village-to-mountain scenerySteps, consecutive walking, simple facilities and altitude considerations

These trips differ in more than scenery. Alpine trekking and a Himalayan itinerary have different travel, accommodation and altitude contexts. None is automatically suitable because it appears in a beginner shortlist.

Choose by the experience you want to repeat

If the idea of shared huts is part of the appeal, compare Alta Via 1 with the TMB’s mix of accommodation. If a Himalayan journey is the central ambition, read the complete Annapurna itinerary and its preparation guidance instead of choosing it simply because its headline duration is shorter.

The walking-day count does not measure difficulty by itself. Ask about the hardest consecutive days, descents, time carrying your pack and what support is available. Tell the team what you have done recently; “I walked hilly terrain for five hours and was comfortable walking again the next day” is more useful than “I am adventurous”.

Build a two-trip shortlist

Your noteWrite down
Current experienceRecent walks, terrain and multi-day experience
PreparationTime before departure and a realistic weekly routine
ComfortShared-room, hut, camping or bathroom requirements
Desired experienceScenery, culture, group travel or a particular mountain objective
UncertaintyThe question that could change your decision

Choose two plausible options and read their full itineraries. For TMB preparation, use the first-timer guide. For Dolomite hut life, read the Alta Via 1 guide. For Nepal, use the Nepal trek chooser.

Make the shortlist personal: Tell LHO about your walking, available dates and comfort preferences. The useful next step is a trip that fits your starting point and gives you a clear preparation path.
