Choosing a Route to Everest Base Camp

Compare the classic EBC approach, Gokyo combinations and Three Passes, then check the complete journey and the route LHO currently offers.

“Everest Base Camp trek” can describe different journeys through the Khumbu. Start by deciding whether reaching base camp is your main aim, whether you want a Gokyo journey, or whether crossing several high passes is central to the experience. Then compare an actual day-by-day itinerary.

Compare the route families

Route familyMain appealDecision to make before choosing
Classic EBC approachThe familiar journey through Namche, the Tengboche area and Dingboche towards the upper Khumbu and base campDoes the schedule allow for the walking, acclimatisation pattern and travel margin you need?
EBC combined with GokyoLakes and another valley as part of a longer mountain journeyIs the proposed connection via Cho La, and are you prepared for the pass and its conditions?
Three PassesA journey organised around Kongma La, Cho La and Renjo La as well as the wider Everest regionDo you have the experience and time for repeated high-pass travel? Is an EBC visit included in that particular itinerary?
Gokyo without EBCA distinct lakes-and-viewpoints objectiveWould you prefer this destination to adding base camp just to complete a list?

These are route families, not interchangeable package names. A trek labelled Gokyo does not necessarily visit Everest Base Camp. A combined Gokyo–EBC itinerary commonly connects via Cho La; Thagnak is on the Gokyo side of that crossing, not an explanation of a separate easy connection. Ask to see the exact route and the plan if conditions prevent a pass crossing.

Compare the whole journey

Look beyond distance. Read the overnight sequence, repeated ascent and descent, rest/acclimatisation days, baggage arrangements and travel plan. Access arrangements can differ between operators and departures; do not assume every trip uses the same airport, flight or road connection.

Extra days or a different valley do not automatically make one version better for you. They change the commitment. The guide’s decisions and current conditions also matter, especially on high passes.

Which route does LHO’s EBC trip describe?

The current LHO Everest Base Camp trek is a 16-day journey using the classic approach, with acclimatisation days at Namche and Dingboche. It is not presented as a Three Passes or Gokyo-combination departure. Check the included flight sectors, their direction and any optional shorter return directly in the current trip details.

Make your shortlist

  • ☐ Name the destination you most want to experience.
  • ☐ Read the route rather than relying on a package title.
  • ☐ Identify high passes and the experience they require.
  • ☐ Count arrival, walking, acclimatisation and departure days separately.
  • ☐ Ask what happens when weather changes access or a crossing.

For the specialist choices, read Gokyo Lakes versus Everest Base Camp and Everest Base Camp via Gokyo. For the classic journey, use our EBC planning questions.

Choose the journey that fits your experience: Ask LHO about your Nepal shortlist, including your available days and previous mountain walks.
