How Difficult is the Tour du Mont Blanc?

It’s one of the most iconic multi day treks in the world and one of the most asked questions we get is: How difficult is it really?
The truth is, the Tour du Mont Blanc can be as challenging or as manageable as you choose to make it. A full self supported journey, carrying your own gear, camping, and cooking, is without a doubt a test of endurance and resilience. But that’s not the experience we offer at Life Happens Outdoors.

Still, make no mistake this is no walk in the park. Here’s what makes it a true achievement:
1. Daily Elevation: It’s All About the Ups and Downs
The Tour du Mont Blanc winds through the French, Swiss, and Italian Alps, which means you’re going to be climbing. A lot.
On most days, you can expect 800 to 1000 meters of vertical gain and loss.
While many people fixate on the uphill, we’ve found that the descents can be just as demanding, especially if you’re not used to using trekking poles. Without them, the pressure on your knees adds up fast. Using poles effectively not only helps preserve your joints but improves balance and confidence on uneven ground.

2. Weather: Don’t Just Prepare for Rain
Most people pack for cold and wet conditions, and while that’s smart, it’s only part of the picture.
What many don’t expect are heatwaves, which are becoming increasingly common in alpine summers. Long climbs in high temperatures can make things feel twice as hard.
Our best advice? Prepare for it all: wind, rain, snow, sunshine, and everything in between. Your experience on the trail will be shaped as much by your gear and adaptability as your physical fitness.
3. Distance: It’s a Long Way, No Matter How You Slice It
The full Tour du Mont Blanc circuit spans roughly 170 kilometers. At Life Happens Outdoors, we’ve designed our version of the trek to cover 110 kilometers, choosing to skip the roadside sections and focus on the most spectacular parts of the route.
Even so, this is a multi day effort. Back to back hiking days, with long hours on your feet, accumulate. Fatigue becomes a factor. And it’s often here, not in one big climb, but in the repetition of effort, that the challenge sets in.

So, How Fit Do You Really Need to Be?
We rate our Tour du Mont Blanc adventure as Moderately Challenging.
It’s designed for people with a good base level of fitness and a spirit for adventure, but not necessarily for elite athletes.
Our recommendations:
To make the most of it and actually enjoy the journey you should be working on:
- Hiking endurance
- Leg strength
- Cardiovascular fitness
Long ascents and steep descents are the name of the game. Add to that long distance walking with a daypack, and it’s easy to see why preparation makes all the difference.

We suggest dedicating at least one day a week to specific training. Think long hikes with elevation gain, stairs or hill training, or gym sessions focused on lower body strength and aerobic capacity. Your future self, somewhere high up in the Alps with a big smile on your face, will thank you.
