Itinerary

DAY 1: WELCOME TO VENICE

Our adventure begins with our arrival in Venice, where we meet at our comfortable accommodation near the airport. This is our gathering point before we begin our journey into the heart of the Dolomites. Early arrivals can take advantage of the regular hotel shuttle into Venice city center, wandering through its maze of canals, bridges, and lively piazzas. It’s a perfect opportunity to soak up the magic of Venice before trading its waterways for towering alpine peaks.
By late afternoon, we regroup at the hotel to settle in, organize gear, and store any non-trail luggage that will remain safely here until our return. In the evening, we come together for our team dinner and trip briefing, hosted by our LHO Team Leader and lead guide. This is where our journey truly begins.

DAY 2: LAGO DI BRAIES TO RIFUGIO SENNES

Distance: 8–10 km | Ascent: ~950 m | Descent: ~200 m | Max Altitude: ~2,300 m
Overnight: Rifugio Sennes | Luggage Access: No
We leave Venice behind at sunrise, traveling by private transfer through rolling Venetian plains and into the dramatic alpine valleys of the Dolomites. The excitement builds as the peaks grow taller with each passing mile. By late morning, we arrive at the shimmering turquoise waters of Lago di Braies, one of the most iconic landmarks in the Dolomites and the official starting point of the Alta Via 1 Dolomites route.
With our boots laced and packs ready, we take our first steps along the Alta Via 1, beginning our hut to hut hiking in the Dolomites adventure. The trail ascends steadily through forests and alpine pastures before opening up to sweeping vistas across the rugged landscape. By late afternoon, we reach Rifugio Sennes, perched high on a plateau with incredible views. Here, surrounded by alpine silence and starlit skies, we settle into our first night of hiking hut to hut in the Dolomites.
Note: Luggage will not be accessible tonight. We hike light with our two-night hut kit.

DAY 3: ACROSS THE FANES PLATEAU

Distance: ~15 km | Ascent: ~1,000 m | Descent: ~650 m | Max Altitude: ~2,500 m

Overnight: Rifugio Fanes | Luggage Access: No

We rise to the crisp mountain air and step into a day defined by wide-open spaces and dramatic limestone formations. The Alta Via trail leads us across the Fanes Plateau, one of the most stunning sections of hiking the Dolomites in Italy. The scenery shifts constantly from quiet meadows dotted with wildflowers to rugged, rocky landscapes shaped by glaciers and time.

Along the way, we pass ancient shepherd huts and alpine lakes, where marmots whistle and eagles soar overhead. This is where the magic of hut to hut hiking in the Dolomites truly comes alive, as we move steadily through a landscape that feels both vast and intimate. By late afternoon, we arrive at Rifugio Fanes, a welcoming hut nestled in this wild alpine paradise.

Our duffle bags will still be moving ahead, so tonight we rely on our lightweight hut kit.

DAY 4: CLIMBING TO THE ROOFTOP OF THE DOLOMITES

Distance: ~13 km | Ascent: ~1,050 m | Descent: ~450 m | Max Altitude: 2,752 m
Overnight: Rifugio Lagazuoi | Luggage Access: No
Today, we take on a climb that brings us to one of the highest and most celebrated points on the Alta Via 1 DolomitesRifugio Lagazuoi. We leave Fanes behind, hiking directly from hut to hut without the need for any transfers, immersing ourselves completely in the wild rhythm of the trail.
The path rises steadily through alpine valleys and rocky corridors, every turn revealing new and expansive views. The final stretch is steep but exhilarating, bringing us to the terrace of Rifugio Lagazuoi, perched at 2,752 meters. Here, the entire Dolomite range spreads out before us, peaks glowing gold and crimson in the setting sun.
We spend the night at this legendary hut, carrying only our essentials as our luggage leapfrogs ahead to Selva di Cadore.

DAY 5: WWI TUNNELS AND THE CINQUE TORRI

Distance: 9–10 km | Ascent: ~250 m | Descent: ~950 m | Max Altitude: 2,752 m
Overnight: Selva di Cadore Hotel | Luggage Access: Yes
Dawn breaks over Lagazuoi, and we begin the day with a short walk to the historic WWI tunnels, where we descend into a network of passages carved by soldiers over a century ago. With headlamps lighting our way, we step through history before emerging into brilliant alpine daylight.
Our journey continues to the dramatic Cinque Torri, five soaring rock spires that rise from lush green meadows. This area is a hub for climbers and photographers, and we pause here to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy a well-earned coffee at Rifugio Scoiattoli.
From here, we descend by chairlift or trail to Bai de Dones, where our private shuttle awaits. A short transfer brings us to Selva di Cadore, where we are reunited with our luggage for the first time since Venice. Tonight, we enjoy private rooms, hot showers, and a celebratory dinner, readying ourselves for the challenge of tomorrow’s Civetta traverse.

DAY 6: THE CIVETTA TRAVERSE

Distance: ~12 km | Ascent: ~600 m | Descent: ~800 m | Max Altitude: ~2,200 m
Overnight: Rifugio Vazzoler | Luggage Access: No
A short morning transfer takes us to Rifugio Coldai, where today’s spectacular traverse begins. This section is a signature highlight of hiking the Dolomites in Italy, following a dramatic path beneath the massive north face of Civetta. This sheer wall of rock, nearly 1,000 meters high, is one of the most awe-inspiring sights in the Dolomites.
The trail winds through rocky ledges, wildflower meadows, and forests, offering unforgettable views at every turn. We end the day at Rifugio Vazzoler, a cozy hut nestled among jagged peaks. This is our final night in the mountains before descending back toward Venice.
Tonight, luggage will not be accessible as our duffle bags are transported ahead to Venice.

DAY 7: THROUGH THE MOIAZZA AND RETURN TO VENICE

Distance: ~10 km | Ascent: ~500 m | Descent: ~700 m | Max Altitude: ~2,000 m
Overnight: Venice Area Hotel | Luggage Access: Yes
Our final day on the Alta Via 1 takes us through the dramatic spires and forests of the Moiazza Group. It’s a day of reflection and celebration as we move steadily toward the journey’s end, savoring every last step.
By midday, we reach Rifugio Carestiato, where we pause for a final alpine coffee or cold drink. From here, a private transfer brings us back to Venice, where our stored luggage awaits. Tonight, we gather for a final dinner, looking back on our shared journey, a week of adventure, growth, and connection forged by hiking hut to hut in the Dolomites.

DAY 8: DEPARTURE DAY

After breakfast, regular shuttles will take us to Venice Marco Polo Airport for departures home. For those with later flights, there’s even time for a last stroll along Venice’s canals before the journey ends.
