Life Happens Outdoors Adds a Helicopter Sector to All Nepal Trips via Lukla
From 1 September 2026, every Life Happens Outdoors Nepal trip that uses Lukla includes one helicopter sector between Kathmandu and Lukla, including trips already booked.
Life Happens Outdoors has updated the published structure of its Nepal trips that use Lukla. One direction between Kathmandu and Lukla will be completed by helicopter, while a fixed-wing flight remains planned for the other direction.
The change applies to the Everest Base Camp Trek, Gokyo Lakes Trek, Island Peak Expedition, Lobuche East Expedition, Mera Peak Expedition and Ama Dablam Expedition. Existing bookings are covered by the inclusion.
How the included sector works
The helicopter sector is not fixed as either the outbound or return journey. Life Happens Outdoors Base Camp and the local team in Kathmandu will decide where to use it according to weather, airport operations and the needs of the trip on the ground. The other sector remains a fixed-wing flight.
This approach gives the operations team an additional planned option when managing the constraints that can affect flights through Lukla. It does not remove every potential delay or guarantee transport in all circumstances, but it reduces reliance on a single transport option.
The inclusion covers the airport transfer between Kathmandu and Lukla only. High-altitude helicopter services, including any return from higher in the Everest region, remain separate.
An additional layer of contingency
The affected trips retain the contingency measures published on their individual trip pages, including the bad weather contingency days on the climbing expeditions and the Kathmandu days built into each itinerary. The helicopter sector is an additional logistical measure, not a replacement for those days.
Combining a planned helicopter sector with the fixed-wing flight and existing itinerary buffers helps reduce the risk of joiners being delayed at the start of a trip or becoming stuck above Lukla at the end. It also gives the team more flexibility to protect the overall itinerary when conditions change.
Clearer costs and more flexibility
By including one helicopter sector in advance, Life Happens Outdoors reduces the likelihood of joiners being asked to fund an ad hoc helicopter transfer for that part of the itinerary. It does not remove every possible additional cost arising from weather or circumstances outside the company’s control.
Using helicopters in both directions would have increased trip prices further. Including one sector keeps the additional cost proportionate while preserving flexibility over where the helicopter is used.
