For LHO’s Kilimanjaro climb, start your travel planning with Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and the arrival instructions for your departure. The airport is the gateway to northern Tanzania; landing there is the beginning of the ground journey, not the start of the walking trail. You still need to connect your flight, airport transfer, overnight stop and first mountain day.
The useful question is not simply which flight reaches Tanzania. It is whether the complete journey gets you to the right place with the agreed time for settling in and preparing with your team.
Start with the airport code and the trip dates
Check that your booking shows JRO, not merely a city or destination name that sounds close to Kilimanjaro. The airport’s own information identifies Kilimanjaro International Airport as JRO and places it between the Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions.
Before purchasing flights, compare your proposed arrival and departure with the organiser’s joining instructions. Pay attention to the local arrival date: an overnight connection can bring you into Tanzania on a different date from the one on which you leave home. A cheaper itinerary can also mean a less convenient arrival or a more complicated onward transfer.
| Check before booking | What you need to establish |
|---|---|
| Arrival airport | The full airport name and code on the final flight segment |
| Arrival date and time | Whether the local arrival fits the trip’s meeting and preparation arrangements |
| First overnight stop | The actual hotel or meeting location for your departure |
| Airport transfer | Whether it is included for that flight, where to meet and who to contact if delayed |
| Return flight | How departure timing fits the final hotel night and agreed transfer |
| Extra nights | Who arranges them and whether they are an additional cost |
Moshi, Arusha and the mountain are different stops
Your airport, overnight base and trailhead serve different purposes. Do not book a hotel solely because a map makes it look close to the mountain: it must also work with the team’s meeting point and road transfers. Likewise, do not assume every Kilimanjaro itinerary starts from the same gate or uses the same town.
LHO’s published Machame itinerary uses Moshi before and after the mountain section. Its nine calendar days include seven trekking days and two hotel nights. The current Kilimanjaro trip page lists private transfers between JRO and Moshi, while international flights and extra nights beyond the itinerary are excluded. Check how those arrangements apply to your proposed flights before committing.
Allow the arrival day to do its job
In the published LHO plan, Day 1 includes the airport transfer, settling into the hotel, a gear check and an evening team briefing. Walking begins on Day 2 after the transfer to Machame Gate. These are different parts of the journey, so do not treat “seven trekking days” as the total time you need away.
Send the team your proposed flight details before booking when timing is uncertain. Ask what happens if a connection is delayed and keep the agreed arrival contact accessible during travel. Confirm any additional hotel or transfer arrangement in writing; an included airport transfer does not automatically establish that every alternative arrival plan is covered.
Check your full travel dates and route with your insurer using the Kilimanjaro insurance checklist.
Finish the practical checks
Use the Kilimanjaro packing guide alongside your airline’s current baggage rules. Check the rules for every carrier and connection, especially if tickets are separate. Keep your final itinerary and the organiser’s arrival instructions available offline.
For route choice, preparation and the wider mountain plan, continue to the Kilimanjaro planning guide. When you are ready to connect that plan to actual travel dates, review LHO’s guided Kilimanjaro itinerary and inclusions and resolve your arrival arrangements with the team.
