It’s little wonder Kilimanjaro is our most popular trekking adventure. You don’t have to be an athlete to make this possible for yourself. The only pre-requisite to this experience is wanting it. Itinerary

This adventure is for everyone from the first-time explorer to the experienced and seasoned trekker alike. Kilimanjaro is a formidable physical and mental challenge that’ll push your boundaries. We recommend picking up a dedicated exercise routine to help prepare for it.

DAY 1: ARRIVING TO KILIMANJARO

We’ll be received at the airport and transferred to the hotel by the LHO team leader. Early arrivals can explore the vibrant town of Moshi at the foot of Kilimanjaro. We highly recommend the Union Coffee Shop in town for those of us who like great coffee and ever better pies. A team briefing and dinner will be held for everyone on our first night together at a trendy Moshi restaurant. This will be the first opportunity for everyone to get to know each other and hear the details about the days to come. Bag checks will be conducted upon returning to the hotel.

DAY 2: MACHAME CAMP

Our first day on the trail starts later than usual. We’ll depart from the hotel at 9am in the direction of the Machame gate. The drive takes a little under one hour. Once at the gate we’ll perform the check in procedures. This can take a while so we’ll be having lunch at the gate before departing for the trail. The first section of the trail is fully in the deep rain forest. It’s an opportunity to see monkeys and other wildlife. This section boasts the most beautiful flora of the trail and we’ll have a lot of time to stop and take pictures. We expect to arrive at Machame camp (3,000 meters) by sunset where dinner will be waiting.

DAY 3: SHIRA

Our second day on the trail starts early as we make our way out of the rainforest into the short grass vegetation zone. The look and feel changes from jungle to alpine vegetation as we make our way to 3,900 meters before descending to Shira camp at 3,700 meters. Lunch on this day will be at Shira camp because we usually arrive early. The afternoon will be spent relaxing and taking pictures of the epic views we get of Mount Meru on the horizon. Dinner will also be at Shira camp.

DAY 4: LAVA TOWER

The trek to Lava Tower is the first real taste of the high altitude environment as we reach almost 4,600 meters of altitude before descending to Baranco at 3,900 meters. We purposely choose the high route to Baranco to enable our bodies to acclimatize. This is also the first full day on the trail. We’ll be having a packed lunch on this day at the Lava Tower before descending to Baranco for our hot dinner. The environment shifts into an alpine desert as we weave our way past dramatic rock formations. It is common to find snow at the higher altitude.

DAY 5: THE BARANCO WALL

The Baranco Wall is a 300-meter-high wall that flanks our camp. From far it appears like a challenging rock climb but as we approach it the trail becomes clear. After a short walk from the camp we’ll begin our ascent. This is traditionally the most exciting day of the trek with plenty of photo opportunities. Once we reach the top there is a gradual trek over fairly well marked terrain. The last section before the camp is an ascent that usually takes around 45 minutes and we intend to reach Karranga camp in time for a hot lunch. The rest of the day will be spent recovering and acclimatizing before dinner later in the evening.

DAY 6: BARAFU SUMMIT BASE CAMP

This is the shortest day on the mountain. The three hour walk to Barafu (4,600 meters) is a beautiful one with the summit ridge of Kilimanjaro clearly visible above us throughout the day. On this day we’ll be running the walk as we do on the summit night. This means that breaks will be short and the pace will be slow but consistent. After arriving at Barafu we’ll have lunch and dedicate the rest of the day to much needed rest. Dinner will be early at 5pm where a full briefing will take place for the summit push. We’ll be woken up at 11pm to prepare to make our move to the top at midnight.

DAY 7: SUMMIT

At midnight, after having some tea and biscuits, we’ll depart the camp in the direction of the summit. The first section to a region known as Kosovo is a little rocky but very manageable. Once at Kosovo the trail eases onto a flat section before starting a section known as the switchbacks. This is where the biggest altitude gain on the trail takes place as we weave our way to reach the crater ridge at Stella Point. From Stella Point the summit becomes visible and it’s a 40 minute easy ascent to Uhuru peak. After taking our pictures we’ll make a direct descent back to Barafu where we’ll rest and have lunch. After lunch we’ll continue down the mountain to Mweika camp at the edge of the rainforest.

DAY 8: MWEIKA

From Mweika we’ll descend the three last hours of the trail to the gate of Kilimanjaro and return to the hotel. A BBQ dinner will be our last event together!

DAY 9: HAKUNA MATTATA!

The final day is dedicated to airport transfers. Breakfast is included at the Chanya Lodge. Team members will be shuttled to the airport depending on flight schedules.

Just did the Feb/Mar Kilimanjaro trip with LHO and it was one of the best experiences! Every detail was thought of, the experience was managed extremely well but most importantly the team did not operate like a tour/adventure agency, they were part of us and that made all the difference! Thank you Rami and team!

Hugely challenging, massively fun, an incredible team environment, and I am all set to do another trip with them next year! Woop!

It’s about the experience! The food was so delicious& nutritious, the group was amazing we quickly became a family & bonded together, the porters& guides were so attentive & helpful and Rami was an amazing team leader always motivating us! Ghenwa Tarabai

Went to Kilimanjaro (Machame route) with LHO this past March - fantastic experience! Highly recommend it. The trail offers gorgeous views and unforgettable sunsets. It is demanding, especially summit night, but deeply exhilarating. The team leader, Rami Rasamny, is a mountaineer in the truest and best sense of the term - knowledgeable about the terrain and conditions, strict when he needs to be and very flexible when he can be. Little is left to chance - morning medical checks, balanced, nutritious meals, even day-bag inspections to ensure proper content and weight. Everything is carefully organized around safety, comfort and sheer fun. Also, the local team, led by Asseno, is simply amazing! It is a fantastic experience that I will always treasure! I have been back only a month and I am already looking forward to my next adventure with LHO :)

Nadine Debbas Achkar

Done 2 Life Happens Outdoors trips now and both have been amazing. Rami and his team think of everything to ensure you experience a safe, fun and fulfilling trip. I would highly recommend Life Happens Outdoors, whether you are stepping out of your comfort zone or are a seasoned trekker. There are trips for all levels and you will be supported/guided every step of the way.

Just did the Kilimanjaro trip with LHO, and It was the best trip I have ever done.

Vicky Gamil

A 24-hour decision turned out to be one of the best I’ve made in my life so far. I can’t sum it up in couple of words; you need to experience it yourself.

Zeina Safa

This trip was an outstanding experience. Rami, and everyone at LHO, were easy to communicate with and answered all the questions to help me prepare for this trip. From the moment they picked me up at the airport everything was extremely organized and easy. I would not have made it to the summit without the help of the entire guide team. I’m stoked to start planning my next trip with them!

Samuel Ayer

A five stars experience with a five stars organization! People truly capable of inspiring and motivating any level adventurer to achieve their goal. I loved it, and so did everyone on our team. Thanks will be back.

Climbing Kilimanjaro brings you closer to Beauty and Life. Climbing Kilimanjaro with Life Happens Outdoors is a whole other story. Being with such inspiring and beautiful people inside out brings more sweetness, joy and love to the experience. In an intense journey, it is wonderful to be surrounded by such caring and loving people.

Lamia Farhat

Our trip to the Kilimanjaro top was one of the best experience I had. The team of Life happens outdoors is on every aspect top of the line . Pro, friendly, psychological, equipped and again friendly! Leaders, guides, cooks, porters all know what to do and are doing more. We felt pampered and thanks to the experience of the team we all joined the top of Africa. You gave us the feeling of family style hike with the strength of international corporation behind us. Thanks again Pascal

Hello, All around great trip with super attentive and caring hosts Anthony and Elie. The guides and porters are gems and an integral part of the trip’s comfort and satisfaction. The tents are comfortable and the mat essential. The food is also adequate and in some cases excellent given how remote the campsites are. In terms of constructive feedback, I would advise future guests that they are very likely to get sick and tired due to the altitude. Had I known, I would’ve brought more medication and painkillers like panadol to take the edge off the headaches. I really appreciated Elie’s attention to detail. He was able to pay attention and follow up with a very demanding group through sickness and health. The man was made to be hospitable.

Leila Kaissi

Amazing trip, very well organised and Bader was incredible. Really enjoyed and will definitely be planning another trip with LHO!

Melissa Jefferies

The trip with Elie and Anthony was amazing and incredibly well organised. The porters and guides in Tanzania were also extremely supportive and made sure that the team had everything they needed to achieve their goals of summitting the mountain. Fully recommend the experience as a great adventure :)

Varsha Muckatira

Such a rewarding experience, even for those who can't summit they will surely gain something. The hotel selection is so good especially after a trip like this one.

Athoub Albusaily

It was definitely an eye opening, soul refreshing, senses tingling trip for both myself and my wife. A trip that started off with a 3D2N safari tour (which was beautifully crafted) which is then followed by the main event - the expedition up to Kilimanjaro. The expedition was well managed, trip leader (Hazem) was so professional yet witty and funny and instantly was able to create a form of rapport with everyone in the team & detailed with his nightly briefly to prepare us for the next day's phase, the guides and porters were sooooo friendly, positive, cheerful, engaging, supportive and most importantly they treated us like one. A family. I dont think what I have typed here served justice to the experience gained and how much my senses have been thoroughly engaged. But I do know for sure, this expedition have certainly touched and recharged my soul, with positivity, enlightenment and a refreshing perspective that I have never felt before after a particular trip.

Khalique Arshad

Experience, guidance, values, support and the community LHO brings...it is all there at its absolute best...I could not have chosen any better.

Lojain Alsharif

For me, it was another long hike, but this time on higher altitude. It was my first real trekking peak. I was well prepared mentally, physically and got the needed gear. With LHO's team they made it easier and more fun. Hazem, our expedition leader along with our 2 local guides, Joakim and Saidi with everyone else in the team from the cook, porters...were simply amazing. Well trained and well prepared, we were well taken care of. Everyone knows his/her job, does it to the full without forgetting the big smile on each ones face. Getting to the peak was a big achievement. The emotions and feelings you get once on Uhuru Peak are undescribable. It was a great adventure and you guys made it unforgettable. Asante Sana Tony

Tony Aoun

Let me just say that i would definitely come back again :) Hazem was amazing, his whole team as well. Thank you all i will never forget this trip.

What's the toilet situation?

There are fixed toilets at the campsites and at different points on the trail. The campsite toilets are relatively well maintained. We also have a private toilet tent that can be used at the campsites. We don't advise anyone to poop in nature because we want to preserve the environment, especially in the higher altitude locations where poop doesn't disappear with rain nor gets absorbed by the soil. It freezes and stays there!

Even during the dry season, it will still rain in the rainforest because of humidity clouds that form at the base of the mountain, and get pushed up to higher altitude by midday. We'll also feel warmer weather and may even find ourselves in shorts and t-shirts as high up as summit base camp (4,600m). Your gear list has everything you need in order to make sure you're able to go through all the different weather conditions and enjoy every aspect of this beautiful mountain.
