How Much Does a Machu Picchu Trek Cost?

Compare a dated LHO Inca Trail price with the full cost of your Peru journey, using an inclusions check and a practical budget worksheet.

The cost of a Machu Picchu trekking holiday is more than the trek’s advertised price. Start with the route, dates and included journey, then add the travel and personal costs you arrange yourself. A four-day trail quote and an eight-day holiday are not directly comparable until you check what each covers.

LHO’s published Inca Trail and Salkantay versions are both eight-day journeys. They include three camping nights, three hotel nights in Cusco and one hotel night in Aguas Calientes. Their routes differ, so confirm the version attached to the departure before comparing the price.

A dated LHO price example

Checked on 28 September 2026, the LHO departure listed for 15–22 May 2027 is labelled Machu Picchu – Inca Trail, with a standard price of £2,725 and a displayed Early Bird price of £2,507. These are a dated example in GBP, not a guaranteed offer for every date or route. Read the current Machu Picchu trip dates and prices before making plans.

LHO offers scheduled group departures on the Salkantay route. Confirm the route, dates, current price and permit position for your chosen departure. The Inca Trail price example above is not a Salkantay quote.

A departure marked Standby has not yet reached its minimum number of participants. Wait until LHO confirms the departure before booking your flights.

Use the actual inclusion and exclusion lists together. “Included” does not mean every drink, upgrade, additional night or independently chosen excursion is covered.

Build your complete budget

Use one currency throughout and date any exchange-rate conversion. The table is a worksheet: an unknown amount remains an unanswered question, not a zero.

LineAmount to enterHow to avoid double counting
A. Booked trip priceYour confirmed route/date priceUse one applicable price, not standard plus promotional price
B. Travel to and from CuscoFlight and other travel quotes, including required baggageDo not add scheduled transfers already included in A
C. Entry and travel documentationCosts applicable to your nationality and journeySeparate personal entry requirements from trek permits included in A
D. Travel insuranceYour suitable policy quoteCheck the complete itinerary and activities with the provider
E. Personal equipment/rentalsItems you actually need after checking the kit listExclude team equipment already provided
F. Additional nights or transfersConfirmed extras outside the booked itineraryIdentify the exact date and service
G. Optional room arrangementConfirmed supplement, if applicableCheck which nights a requested private room covers. If you want to share but no roommate is available, LHO covers the extra room cost.
H. Personal spending and tipsYour planned allowance, informed by current guidanceKeep discretionary spending separate from required charges
I. ContingencyA reserve you choose for disruption or other unplanned costsIt is a reserve, not a promised charge
Complete cash budgetA + B + C + D + E + F + G + H + IDo not call this complete while required inputs are unknown

Using the dated £2,507 example only establishes line A. It does not establish an all-in trip total. Your home airport, insurance, equipment and preferences can materially change the final amount.

Compare Inca Trail and Salkantay quotes fairly

Compare the same dimensionQuestion for each quote
Route and timeIs this the trail segment only or the full holiday? Which travel days are included?
AccommodationHow many hotel/camping nights, and on what sharing basis?
Support and baggageWhat guiding, camp equipment and personal baggage allowance are included?
AccessWhich permits, Machu Picchu visit and ticketed circuit are covered?
Transport and mealsWhich journeys and meals are included, and where does responsibility change?
Availability and termsIs the route available on the date quoted, and what booking/payment terms apply?

Do not assume Salkantay is always cheaper, or that a higher price guarantees a better fit. Compare the journey you want and the services actually included. Use the Inca Trail versus Salkantay comparison for terrain, scenery and suitability rather than treating price as the whole decision.

Before you commit

  • ☐ I have a current quote for the route and date I want.
  • ☐ I have distinguished itinerary description from confirmed departure availability.
  • ☐ I have checked the inclusions and exclusions side by side.
  • ☐ I have added travel, personal kit and other applicable costs.
  • ☐ I understand what any supplement covers.
  • ☐ I have read the current booking terms and asked about unresolved costs.

Use the Peru packing checklist to decide which equipment costs belong in your budget. Explore the current LHO Machu Picchu trip or ask for a route-and-date-specific discussion before booking travel around an assumed departure.
