The Roof of Africa

Embarking on a journey of self-discovery can lead to a powerful transformation and renewed purpose. For many, the idea of pushing boundaries, trying new things, and stepping outside of their comfort zone resonates deeply. Summiting Mount Kilimanjaro is on the bucket list of those who dream of achieving this milestone once in a lifetime. Its Uhuru Peak, the highest on the continent, standing at 5,895m/19,341ft and known as the “Roof of Africa,” has captured the aspirations of those seeking fulfillment on a soul-searching quest.

In February 2021, I traveled to Tanzania with the ambitious goal of reaching the summit of this towering free-standing mountain and dormant volcano. The anticipation of this life-changing experience was heightened by my personal struggle with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Since December 2018, this autoimmune condition had significantly impacted my life, particularly my relationship with my daughter Leyan. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic further added to the hardship, widening the physical and emotional distance between us. Since her birth, I vowed never to dictate her path—a commitment I often failed at, especially as she entered her teenage years. I was grappling with this ‘new reality’ through stages of denial, self-pity, and eventual acceptance.
Despite adversity and medical warnings, I was determined to embark on this expedition, and the idea of wearing Leyan’s school hat to the summit gave me strength. Along the way, I encountered Life Happens Outdoors, an inspiring community that encapsulates the essence of pushing boundaries to “come back different,” exemplified by its members achieving goals against all odds. The grueling seven-day trek, battling harsh weather and physical strain, ended in a triumphant moment. Our team led the way to the peak, as the sun rose on “Kili” and the snow began to melt. By the time I cleared the heavy snow off the signboard, other hikers had arrived to celebrate this unforgettable moment.

The pursuit of personal growth and resilience in the face of adversity is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for transformation. As I reflect on this trip, I am reminded of the power of perseverance and the profound impact of finding strength even when it is merely symbolic. I have learned not to force the bond between my daughter and me, but to earn it and nurture it. I have also found much joy in sharing the journey. To Leyan’s surprise, I gave inspirational speeches to her class and other grades at her school, echoing Diana Ross’s 1970 hit, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”
For my own lesson, I learned that each step toward the top symbolized not just a physical ascent, but a metaphorical rise toward clarity, purpose, and inner strength. This journey reinforced the notion that today’s struggles pave the way for future victories.
Here’s a light-hearted nod to my South African friend Shaun Howard—a snapshot proving (jokingly) that I’ve been to “his roof.”
