Experience and credentials

Emmanuel Matinde Asseno, also known as Steven Asseno, has more than 20 years of experience on Kilimanjaro. He began his career on the mountain as a porter and spent seven years in that role before progressing to guide, giving him direct experience of both guest-facing guidance and the work of mountain crews. He has completed more than 170 Kilimanjaro summits and has led climbers on routes including Lemosho, Machame and Marangu. He served one term as Chairman of the Kilimanjaro Guides Association from 2017 to 2020 and remains a Board Member as of August 2026.

Credentials: Tanzanian mountain guiding licence no. 037979, issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and valid from 1 January through 31 December 2026; Wilderness First Responder certification, completed in 2023 and confirmed current in August 2026.
