SPAGHETTI TOUR EXPEDITION

Outrageous The Alps

Spaghetti Tour Expedition

AN ALPINE EXPEDITION TO THE 4000 METER SUMMITS OF THE MONTE ROSA MASSIF.

The Spaghetti Tour gets its name from the Italian mountain huts along the trail that all serve Spaghetti for dinner! This route is a major alpine achievement that includes multiple summits above 4000 meters including the summit of the Monte Rosa, the second highest summit in the Alps. Although not as technically demanding as some of our other LHO Alpine Accademny experiences, it ranks amongst the most physically challenging because of the altitudes reached and the distances covered. It's a classic for anyone seeking the ultimate alpine experience.

Itinerary

A classic expedition in the alps for those of us who enjoy glacier travel, mild ridges and altitude. Although all our Alpine Accademy adventures include specific training, this adventure is not for first-time mountaineers. Basic crampon, ice axe and rope skills are required to join.

DAY 1: ARRIVING TO ZERMATT

Day 1 is arrival day. If you require pick-ups from Geneva airport, please let us know otherwise we’ll meet you at the Banhoff or Zermatt train station. Check-in starts at 3 pm but we can store our bags at the hotel and roam around if we arrive early. We highly recommend arriving early in order to rent gear. The gear stores close at 7 pm. A team dinner and briefing will take place at 7:30 pm with your team leaders and mountain guides. It may be possible to rent gear on the following day if you can’t make it before the store closes.

DAY 2: UP TO THE BREITHORN

We’ll be meeting at your accommodation for some last-minute checks before heading to the Furi Cable to catch the Matterhorn Express cable up to the Klein Matterhorn. From the cable, we’ll make our way from 3800 meters up to the Breithorn for our first 4000er of the experience. From there, we’ll traverse over to the Central Breithorn via the Ridge Traverse before making our way down across the Italian border to the Refugio Guide d’Ayas which sits in the middle of a gigantic ice fall at the end of the Ayas valley.

DAY 3: CASTOR AND POLLUX

On our way down to Refugio d’Ayas we would have seen the towering Pollux and Castor pyramids on our left hand side. That’s where we’re heading today. Both are slightly more demanding technically than the warm up run on the Breithorn, but are spectacular ascents with incredibly rewarding views. Pollux will be the starting summit followed by its bigger brother Castor. From there, we’ll head down to the Quintino Sella hut for a well deserved rest.

DAY 4: LYKASAMM

This will be our first day tackling only one summit and for very good reason. The Lykasamm is the most impressive summit of the Spaghetti tour and will require a full day’s commitment to reach the summit and traverse the ridge over to the other side. From the top, the full expanse of the Spaghetti tour will be visible to us. We’ll return to the Refugio Gnefetti for the night.

DAY 5: SUMMIT BAGGING

This is the day we hit all the summits on the natural border between Italy and Switzerland and that list of summits suddenly becomes quite impressive. We’ll be traversing the summits of Balmenhorn, Schwarzhorn, Ludwigshohe, Parrotspitze and Zumsteinspitze which is the highest reachable summit of our trip at 4563 meters. The night will be spent at the famous Refugio Margherita, the highest refuge in the alps.

DAY 6: ZERMATT

Our last day together will be the long descent back to Zermatt via the Monte Rosa Glacier and the Gonergrat train. We’ll be having our farewell dinner at a local restaurant

DAY 7: AU REVOIR!

Our final day together will be dedicated to airport transfers and farewells. Breakfast is included on the day. Please make sure that you provide us with your departure details before the first day of the trip so arrangements can be made.

How should I train for this experience?

Training for this traverse is all about cardio and strength. The focus of the cardio should be to become comfortable with a high heart rate. If you take up something like spinning, you'd familiarize yourself with the feeling of heavy and fast heartbeats so that, even though you won't be experiencing it as acutely or for as sustained a period as during a spinning session, your body would feel comfortable and ready to cope when it occurs on the trail. Cardio training recommendations include running, swimming, spinning, cycling, rollerblading, or really anything that you can think of that is fun and sustainable for you where you live. Pilates or Yoga are great for training muscles to adapt to stress positions. Both of them enable your body to work as a whole unit with a focus on engaging the core.

Is this trip suitable for someone not so experienced in the outdoors and who hasn't been to altitudes above 3000 meters?

We run the Spaghetti Tour trip based on the assumption that our joiners have some experience with basic mountaineering. We do include some basic training but we do require that team members have some exposure to adventures of this nature prior to the start date. In terms of altitude, we do spend a large amount of time above 4000. Our itinerary is designed to account for proper acclimatization and assumes that everyone is joining us with no recent exposure to altitude.

The Gear List suggests a 30L backpack for this trip but it seems too small to be able to fit everything on the gear list.?

30L is the perfect size for this trip and if you feel you may need a little extra space then don't exceed 40L. Adventure gear is designed to be stuffed and occupies very little space when packed efficiently. Don't worry. We'll be there to help you pack efficiently for the week.
