5 Adventurous Date Ideas

1- Midnight “Summiteering”

Before you get all excited, don’t think of this as an opportunity to flex your mountaineering skills. This is supposed to be a romantic evening. So Mont Blanc is off the table. Look at something you can trek up for a couple of hours, easily carry a picnic for, and not be too worried about life threatening voids if a bottle of wine were to make an appearance. If you’re lucky you’ll have a clear night with a couple of shooting stars and crack the classic “I planned that”. It’s only cute once. Don’t over use it.

2- Rock Climbing

Couples who climb together stay together. Or at the very least they reveal what they’re really like under pressure and save you the time and energy of having to figure this one out years down the line. But seriously, whether at a local gym or out on a nearby crag, this could be a lot of fun and really set this relationship apart from the typical date. The bonding experience is supercharged. Just avoid beans at lunch if you plan on pulling out the climbing moves to impress. This one’s from experience.

3- Road Trip!

This one is awesome if you want to find out if your partner can tell right from left. Trust me, you’ll get it when you get it. Road tripping is easy, fun and can be a cool way to get some alone time without it having to be typical. You can couple this with camping and make it a weekender. Just keep an eye on the gas and make sure you’ve checked those tire pressures.

You’d be surprised how unimpressed your partner can be by the “this will make a great story for the grand kids” line. Partner selection starts with attention to detail.

4- Stand Up Paddle!

If ever there was a benign sport with next to no possibility for disaster it’s stand up paddle (…he said before he fell crotch first onto a jellyfish). The worst case scenario, once you’ve done Joey’s method for dealing with the sting, is neither of you can stand up and you both just sit on one board and float about. Or even better; only one of you can stand and end up paddling your seated partner around for the afternoon. Yup, I can hear the church bells ringing and the divorce lawyers inking their pens already… Jump!

5- Plan an Adventure Travel Experience

Naturally a product plug was going to feature somewhere in all of this. Unless you’ve literally landed on this article for your first ever visit to lifehappensoutdoors.com in which case welcome to our adventure travel community! But back to my point. Let me put it to you this way: The last couple that joined us in Bhutan, where we trekked to the fertility temple, were rushing to tie the knot before the proverbial clock made it impossible to conceal what had happened. This isn’t to say that babies are made in Bhutan. But it is to say that couples who plan a trip together, experience it, and survive… well… that’s usually a pretty good sign. #Justsaying
