Itinerary

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN KALYMNOS

Our adventure begins as we arrive at Kalymnos Port, where you’ll be met by our LHO transfer partners and driven across the picturesque island to your hotel in Masouri.

Your LHO Team Leader will be waiting at the hotel to assist you with checking into LHO’s base camp for the week. We’ll have the opportunity to do gear checks and rentals and rent scooters for those that would like one. At around 7:30 pm, we’ll head out for a team dinner. This is the first opportunity for us all to meet each other, learn about the week ahead, and ask any questions we may have.

DAY 2: CLIMBING AT THE ODYSSEUS SECTOR

After breakfast, we’ll head out from Masouri to the Odysseus sector, a quick 15-minute trip. This historic sector is located in a beautiful canyon and features a range of well-bolted routes that cater to climbers of all skill levels. The sector is named after the epic hero Odysseus, and its routes reflect the adventurous spirit of his journey. With over 30 routes, the sector offers a mix of slabs, vertical walls, and overhangs, providing plenty of opportunities to learn and improve.

Beginners start with a briefing and lesson, while experienced climbers head straight to the routes. At midday, we’ll take a break for lunch at a beachside taverna and cool off with a swim. After some relaxation, we’ll return to the crag for more climbing. Dinner is at the port, with a debriefing of the day’s climb and a briefing on the next day’s climb.

DAY 3: CLIMBING AT THE ARCHI SECTOR

We’ll get a relatively early start today as we head out to the Archi sector, known for its thrilling overhangs and unique features. Situated on the western side of Kalymnos, Archi offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. The routes here are characterized by steep, overhanging limestone formations and sharp pinnacles that require technical skill and strength. With grades ranging from moderate to advanced, Archi is ideal for climbers looking to test their limits.

After a morning of climbing, we’ll have lunch at a nearby beachside taverna, followed by a swim and some downtime. In the afternoon, we’ll return to the crag to push our grade and enjoy the more forgiving afternoon weather before heading back to the Masouri port for dinner.

DAY 4: MASTERING THE ARGINONTA CRAG

After breakfast, we head to the Arginonta crag, located on the eastern side of Kalymnos. This crag is perfect for improving our skills, offering a diverse range of climbing styles and grades. The routes at Arginonta are known for their variety, including technical slabs, pumpy overhangs, and endurance-testing vertical walls. The crag is divided into multiple sectors, each offering unique challenges, making it an excellent spot for progression and skill development.

We spend the morning tackling various routes. Lunch is at a nearby beach, providing a chance to unwind before returning to the crag. We end the day with dinner in the port town, sharing stories and preparing for the next adventure.

DAY 5: EXPLORING TELENDOS ISLAND

After breakfast, we’ll hop on a ferry to Telendos Island to climb at the Irox crag, nestled by the sea with stunning views and challenging routes. Irox is known for its tranquil setting and diverse climbing options. The routes here range from beginner-friendly slabs to more challenging overhangs and tufa-strewn walls. The crag’s proximity to the sea offers breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere, making it a favorite among climbers.

With no tavernas nearby, we’ll bring lunch packs for a seaside picnic. The afternoon will be spent climbing and exploring the serene island before returning to Masouri for dinner.

DAY 6: DEEP WATER SOLOING IN VATHI

Our final full day of climbing offers a new adventure: deep water soloing in Vathi. Deep water soloing is a type of rock climbing where the climber ascends sea cliffs without the use of ropes or harnesses, relying on the water below as protection in case of a fall. After breakfast, we ride to Vathi, a stunning location renowned for its crystal-clear waters and dramatic cliffs, which provide the ideal setting for this exciting activity. The climbs focus on traversing and performing dynamic moves over the water, often culminating in a thrilling leap or fall into the sea below. This unique style of climbing combines the challenge of traditional rock climbing with the exhilaration of free-falling, offering an experience that is both thrilling and liberating.

We enjoy lunch at a beachside taverna, followed by an afternoon of relaxation. We return to Masouri for a final dinner at the port, celebrating our achievements.

DAY 7: MULTIPITCH ADVENTURE

Our last day begins with breakfast and preparation for multi-pitch climbing, a style of climbing that allows us to ascend greater heights than single-pitch routes. Multi-pitch climbing involves climbing a long route that is divided into several shorter sections, or pitches. After completing each pitch, the lead climber sets up an anchor at a belay station, where they secure themselves and belay the second climber up. This process is repeated until the top of the route is reached.

Depending on the group’s level, we head to either Telendos or Spartacus. The multi-pitch routes in Telendos offer breathtaking views and a unique climbing experience, while Spartacus is renowned for its spectacular climbs and diverse challenges. These routes are long and varied, requiring teamwork, endurance, and a sense of adventure. We may split into smaller teams to match each climber’s skills and ambitions.

After a morning of climbing, we enjoy lunch at a beachside taverna and spend the afternoon swimming and relaxing. We finish the day with a farewell dinner in Masouri.

DAY 8: FAREWELL AND DEPARTURE

Our final day together is dedicated to airport transfers. Breakfast is included on this day. Please ensure that you provide us with the correct flight times in advance of the trip so that the team can arrange your pick-up according to your departure time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Kalymnos, Greece?

The easiest way to get to Kalymnos Greece is to fly to the nearby island of Kos, which has an international airport with regular flights from major European cities. From Kos Airport, you can take a taxi to the nearby port of Mastichari, where you will catch a 40 minute ferry to the port of Kalymnos. Ferries run almost every hour, but we recommend reserving your place ahead of time during peak season to guarantee your spot, especially on the way back when you may be under time pressure to catch a flight. If you are joining one of our Kalymnos climbing trips, just reach out to the Life Happens Outdoors team and we will help you arrange your transportation to and from Kalymnos smoothly and easily.

Where do we stay on Kalymnos?

We stay in top quality beachfront hotel accommodation right on the seafront of Masouri, the heart of the Kalymnos climbing scene. This charming village is where climbers from all over the world gather, and it is just a short walk from the island’s main shops, bars, and restaurants. Our choice of accommodation is designed to help you unwind and relax after a day on the crags, offering both comfort and convenience in one of the most beautiful and vibrant corners of Kalymnos Greece. The included accommodation is based on shared twin rooms, with single rooms available upon request.

Will there be entry level training on how to rock climb?

Absolutely. No prior experience in rock climbing is necessary. Everything you need to know will be taught during the trip, and our guides will support you every step of the way. This is a perfect opportunity for anyone curious about climbing in Kalymnos to learn in a fun, supportive, and incredibly scenic environment. One of the best things about Kalymnos climbing is that adjacent routes often have vastly different grades. This means that first timers and experienced climbers can climb side by side at the same crags, encouraging each other and sharing the experience without compromising on their individual levels and abilities.

I'm already a rock climber and I'm seeking to improve my grade and skills. Is this the trip for me?

Absolutely. Kalymnos climbing is renowned for offering a wide range of routes across all grades, often within the same crag. This makes it one of the best destinations in the world for climbers looking to push their limits and sharpen their skills. Whether you are working on technique, building confidence, or aiming to improve your grade, this trip offers the perfect environment to do so. Our team includes instructors who work with you based on your current level, ensuring you get the right support, guidance, and challenge throughout your Kalymnos rock climbing journey.

How fit do I need to be to Rock Climb on Kalymnos?

Anyone can join this experience. You do not need to be in peak physical condition to enjoy rock climbing in Kalymnos — what matters most is your willingness to try, learn, and have fun. This trip is also a great opportunity to use the experience as a springboard to kick start your own fitness journey, both physically and mentally. Whether you are new to climbing or already active, you will find encouragement, support, and challenge at your own pace in one of the most inspiring Kalymnos climbing environments.

How do we get around on Kalymnos?

We get around using a team car driven by your Life Happens Outdoors team leader, which makes it easy and convenient to reach different Kalymnos climbing crags throughout the trip. For those who want a bit more independence, you can also choose the scooter option from our trip add ons and have your own personal ride. This is the more traditional way of getting around Kalymnos, and it truly adds to the island vibe experience. It is probably the only place in the world where you will see board shorts, flip flops, climbing ropes, and a scooter all come together — a true reflection of the laid back spirit of climbing in Kalymnos.

Are there multi-pitch climbing routes on Kalymnos?

Absolutely. While there are some multi pitch routes on Kalymnos, the most iconic and technically impressive ones are found on the nearby island of Telendos, just a 15 minute ferry ride from Masouri. As part of our Kalymnos climbing itinerary, we include a day trip to Telendos specifically for multi pitch climbing, because it is such a classic part of the local climbing experience. It adds an exciting dimension to the trip and gives climbers the chance to enjoy longer, more sustained routes in a truly spectacular setting.

Will we have the opportunity to climb in the famous Grande Grotta?

Absolutely. The Grande Grotta is one of the most iconic features of Kalymnos climbing, and we make sure to include it in the experience. While there are only a couple of routes at easier grades in the cave, we usually dedicate one late afternoon to climbing there so that everyone can enjoy the unforgettable experience of climbing in the cave at sunset — a true Kalymnos classic. If members of the group are climbing at higher levels and want to spend more time at the Grande Grotta, that can definitely be arranged. It is a legendary part of the Kalymnos Greece climbing scene, and well worth the visit for anyone who wants to feel the full energy of this unique destination.

What are the meals like on the Rock Climbing in Kalymnos trip?

All meals are included on the Rock Climbing in Kalymnos trip, starting with dinner on the arrival day and ending with breakfast on departure day. Breakfast is served buffet style at the hotel, offering a variety of options to start the day right. Lunch is typically a picnic, including a sandwich, a snack, and a piece of fruit — perfect for refueling during a day out on the crags. Dinner is hosted at a local taverna, either in Masouri or another beautiful spot on the island, where you’ll enjoy authentic Greek cuisine in a relaxed setting.
