What this page shows
An account of every season
LHO has operated in the Chamonix Valley since 2018, with no Mont Blanc courses in 2020. This record includes attempts, individual summits, decisions to turn around, changes of objective and reported safety events.
Client outcomes are counted per course. Readiness decisions and alternatives remain visible alongside Mont Blanc summits.
2026 operating decisions
When conditions changed, so did the plan.
LHO reports heatwaves from late May and difficult couloir conditions. In early July, it decided to redirect groups away from Mont Blanc. The decision remained in place until 1 September.
Only one team operated after the decision to resume. One client on that team reached the summit on 11 September; the annual total was four.

Decisions and Mont Blanc outcomes
LHO reports heatwaves from late May. In early July, it decided to redirect groups away from Mont Blanc; this decision remained in place until 1 September.
Eight clients started the Mont Blanc phase. Four summited; all four turnarounds were at Tête Rousse: two because of wind early in the season and two following a reported fatal incident in the couloir.
Only one team operated after the decision to resume Mont Blanc. One client from that team summited on 11 September. The annual total remains four.
Forty-eight clients did not attempt Mont Blanc. Thirty belonged to the six full-course redirects; the other 18 made individual changes or withdrew. The initial readiness-related share of these non-attempts has not been recorded.

All clients in the six full-course redirects.
Weissmies: 6 clients summited
Following the approach to Almageller Hut.
Monte Rosa: 10 clients turned around
Insufficient fitness in the conditions on the alternative summit push; no other summit achieved.

Chose not to continue when Mont Blanc was unavailable.
Reported safety events
No LHO client injury, illness, rescue request or completed evacuation was reported. LHO guides at Tête Rousse assisted a rescue involving two unguided climbers outside the LHO programme. LHO also reports that the couloir incident was fatal; casualty details have not been independently verified. The outside assistance is recorded as one operational event, separately from client outcomes.
Counting notes
The 36 alternative summit clients include the 30 in full-course redirects. The ten alternative turnarounds are not Mont Blanc turnarounds. Their later fitness limits do not establish why their Mont Blanc attempts did not start.

LHO reports that about 60% of all 48 clients summited Mont Blanc. This gives an estimated 29 summits and seven turnarounds among 36 attempt starters.

Decisions and Mont Blanc outcomes
Two courses were redirected to Monte Rosa before a Mont Blanc attempt because of bad weather.
The other 36 clients started a Mont Blanc attempt. Turnarounds were attributed to physical ability on the day.
The summit headcount was reconstructed from a percentage: 60% × 48 = 28.8, rounded to an estimated 29 clients. Estimated turnarounds are 36 − 29 = 7.

Twenty clients summited Mont Blanc, four stopped at Goûter Hut and 20 did not start an attempt.

Of the 20 non-attempts, 12 were attributed to weather and eight to ability or readiness.
Three courses were redirected in full before any client attempted Mont Blanc. The number of clients specifically within those three courses was not recorded separately.
No course had every client summit Mont Blanc.

LHO reports that about 40% of all 48 clients summited Mont Blanc. This gives an estimated 19 summits and 21 turnarounds among 40 attempt starters.

Decisions and Mont Blanc outcomes
Eight clients across two courses were redirected to Monte Rosa before a Mont Blanc attempt because of poor conditions on Mont Blanc.
Forty clients started an attempt. The reported summit percentage gives 40% × 48 = 19.2, rounded to an estimated 19 summits. Estimated turnarounds are 40 − 19 = 21.
One client was evacuated for exhaustion from Abri Vallot. Three friends on the same course chose to stop after the evacuation, returned to Goûter Hut and descended the following day.
The evacuation and those three decisions account for four of the estimated 21 turnarounds. They did not affect other courses; reasons for the other turnarounds have not been recorded.

Monte Rosa: 8 clients redirected
Named peaks and individual alternative summit outcomes were not recorded.
Reported safety events
One client was evacuated by helicopter from Abri Vallot for exhaustion and taken to Sallanches hospital. This is one reported health and rescue event, one evacuation request and one completed evacuation. The client is included in the Mont Blanc turnaround count.
Counting notes
The original 40% rate used all 48 clients as its denominator. The estimated headcounts are not confirmed individual outcome records. The missing Monte Rosa outcomes remain unknown rather than zero.

Reported safety events
The client with knee pain received ice and used their own medication. A helicopter evacuation was requested, but wind prevented the flight. After rest and waiting, the client descended with the guide. Record: one reported health event, one helicopter evacuation request and zero completed helicopter evacuations.
Counting notes
Forty-four distinct clients reached an alternative summit. Additional Punta Gnifetti ascents are not added to the client total. The guided descent is described explicitly and is not counted as a completed helicopter evacuation.

The toe injury is included under this page’s reporting definition even though treatment was minor. Booking receipts have been identified as possible evidence for the two pilot-course participation totals but have not been reviewed.

2018
Minor injury during training
One bruised toe received basic treatment and a boot change. Discomfort continued into the summit phase. One client event; no evacuation.
2022
Evacuation requested; no flight
Knee pain stopped one client at Goûter Hut. Wind prevented the requested helicopter flight; the client later descended with the guide. One request; no completed external evacuation.
2023
Helicopter evacuation
One client was evacuated from Abri Vallot for exhaustion and taken to Sallanches hospital. One request; one completed evacuation.
2026
Assistance to outside climbers
LHO guides assisted a rescue connected with a reported fatal couloir incident. The climbers were outside the LHO client cohort. One outside operational event; no client evacuation.
These are retrospective operator reports, not a complete contemporaneous incident log. Each underlying event is counted once, even where it involved treatment, an evacuation request and an evacuation.
Methodology and evidence
How to read this record
People, courses and denominators
A client is counted once for each course participation. Guides and staff are excluded. The series does not deduplicate a person who joined more than one course or year.
A Mont Blanc summit rate can use all course clients or clients who started an attempt. Every rate on this page names its denominator. No rate is calculated for 2020 because no courses operated.
A summit is an individual outcome, not a successful course. Full-team summit outcomes are not inferred from individual totals.
What counts as an attempt
For this reconstruction, an attempt means starting the planned Mont Blanc phase, including its approach. It does not require leaving the highest hut for the final summit push. Stops at Tête Rousse and Goûter Hut are therefore retained as reported attempt turnarounds.
Regular acclimatisation and training climbs are excluded. Each client receives one final Mont Blanc outcome per course: summit, turnaround after starting, or no attempt. Repeat attempt events were not recorded separately.
Redirects and readiness
A full-course redirect means the whole course changed its Mont Blanc objective before any client started an attempt. Its client count is a subset of all Mont Blanc non-attempts; individual changes may occur outside that subset.
A readiness-related non-attempt means the client did not start the Mont Blanc phase because of ability or readiness. Fatigue after starting Mont Blanc is a turnaround; fatigue on an alternative objective is recorded against that alternative.
The 2026 readiness split and the client count within the three 2024 full-course redirects remain unrecorded.
Alternative objectives and summits
An alternative summit client reached at least one substitute summit. Each client is counted once in this measure, even if they reached two peaks. Where known, the year account separately explains person-peak ascents.
A client who turned around on Mont Blanc can also have reached an alternative summit. Normal training summits are excluded. Reaching Gnifetti Hut is not the same as summiting Punta Gnifetti.
The named peaks and individual alternative outcomes for the eight Monte Rosa clients in 2023 remain unrecorded.
The reporting definition for events
For this retrospective page, an event is reportable when it includes an injury receiving first aid or medical care; a health problem changing participation; a rescue or evacuation request; a completed external evacuation; or guide assistance in a rescue of outside climbers.
Count the underlying event once. Ordinary weather decisions and fatigue-related turnarounds without a reported health intervention are shown in the outcome record. This definition was applied to the supplied recollections; it is not presented as a pre-existing audited LHO incident policy.
Existing-guide descents are described in the event account. They are not counted as completed external evacuations. Outside climbers never enter LHO client participation or evacuation denominators.
Estimates, missing data and evidence
In 2023, about 40% of 48 clients gives approximately 19 summits and 21 turnarounds. In 2025, about 60% of 48 gives approximately 29 summits and seven turnarounds. Rounded whole-person estimates are marked ≈ throughout.
All other figures are operator-reported or arithmetic derived from those reports; they have not been independently verified. “Not recorded” is preserved wherever the supplied account does not establish a count.
Booking receipts may substantiate bookings and, after reconciliation, participation totals. They do not on their own prove attendance, summit outcomes or the absence of incidents. No receipts or guide logs have been examined for this version.

LHO’s stated maximum public-course group size is six. The groups of eight in 2022 and 2024 were confirmed as private bookings. The 2018 pilot group’s booking type was not recorded.
