Itinerary

DAY 1: WELCOME TO CHAMONIX

Our Tour du Mont Blanc experience begins with your arrival in the Chamonix Valley. If you are flying into Geneva airport, our transfer partners will meet you and bring you directly to our hotel in Chamonix. Airport transfers are included between 6:30 am and 7:30 pm, and we ask all community members to share their arrival and departure times with LHO Base Camp in advance.

If you are meeting us at the hotel, your LHO Team Leader will be there to welcome you. Hotel check in starts at 3 pm, but early arrivals are welcome to store their bags and explore the town. Your Team Leader will share suggestions for things to do in Chamonix, a place deeply connected to the history of the Tour du Mont Blanc trek.

If you need to rent or buy trekking gear, plan to arrive early, as most Chamonix outdoor shops close around 7 pm. This ensures you have everything you need before our early start the following morning.

In the evening, we gather for a team dinner and briefing at 7:30 pm, hosted by your Team Leader and lead mountain guide. Gear checks will be completed throughout the day depending on your arrival time.

For more insight into what to expect on the trail and how to prepare, you can explore our Definitive Guide to Trekking the Tour du Mont Blanc, which offers helpful context for the journey ahead.

DAY 2: THE SPECTACULAR LAC BLANC

Distance: 8.5 KM | Ascent: 148 M | Descent: 1299 M | Max Altitude: 2,595 M

Our first day on the Tour du Mont Blanc trail begins with one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Chamonix region. After breakfast, we take public transport to the Flegere cable car and continue up to l’Index, the high point where today’s trekking stage begins. From here, the Mont Blanc massif rises across the valley while the Aiguilles Rouges stand above us, creating a dramatic introduction to the TMB.

We head east toward Lac Blanc on a well marked alpine trail that typically takes around two hours. This is one of the most iconic locations on the Tour du Mont Blanc, known for its turquoise water and striking reflections of the surrounding peaks. Weather permitting, Lac Blanc becomes our picnic stop, offering time to enjoy the scenery and take photos.

After lunch, we begin our long descent toward the valley floor and continue to Argentiere, a peaceful village east of Chamonix. The descent is steady and can be challenging, so trekking poles are recommended for comfort and knee support.

We end the day in Argentiere or nearby Le Tour with hot showers and a well earned dinner, marking a strong start to our Tour du Mont Blanc trek.

DAY 3: OVER THE PASS INTO SWITZERLAND

Distance: 13 KM | Ascent: 832 M | Descent: 1019 M | Max Altitude: 2,201 M

We begin the day with an early bus from Argentiere to Le Tour, allowing us to skip a less scenic road section and start directly on the trail. If we spent the previous night in Le Tour, no transfer is required. From the village, we begin our first major ascent of the Tour du Mont Blanc, climbing steadily toward Col du Balme, the natural border between France and Switzerland.

As we ascend, Mont Blanc rises behind us while the Swiss Alps come into view ahead. The trail passes through open berry fields, grazing pastures and winding paths that offer a constant view of the Le Tour glacier to our right. This section is a favourite for many hikers, with wide panoramas unfolding as we climb. At the mountain pass, we often pause for a coffee break if the weather allows.

A picnic lunch follows in one of the open meadows overlooking the glacier. From Col du Balme, we begin our descent into Switzerland along a forested trail that gradually leads us toward Trient. The pink church of Trient appears as we reach the valley, marking our arrival in this peaceful village surrounded by high alpine walls.

We spend the evening in Trient, a quiet and welcoming stop on the Swiss section of the Tour du Mont Blanc.

DAY 4: FOLLOWING THE BLACK COWS TO THE LAKE

Distance: 14 KM | Ascent: 972 M | Descent: 805 M | Max Altitude: 2,043 M

After breakfast, we begin the day with a steady ascent to Col de la Forclaz. Many Life Happens Outdoors community members look forward to the berry cakes at the café on the pass, so we make this a planned stop whenever the weather allows. After the break, we continue along the trail as it enters a deep forest and rises toward the Bovine region, named for the black cows that graze across these open pastures.

As we approach the high point of the day, the forest opens into wide meadows with sweeping views of the Swiss Alps. We pause here for lunch in a quiet clearing before beginning our descent toward Champex Lac. The descent winds through shaded woodland similar to the previous day, with the forest becoming denser as we approach the valley.

The trail concludes with a gentle incline leading into Champex Lac, a peaceful lakeside village surrounded by mountains and pine forests. This is our final stop in Switzerland on the Tour du Mont Blanc, offering a calm and scenic finish before we cross into Italy the following day.

DAY 5: BUONGIORNO ITALIA!

Distance: 9.8 KM | Ascent: 770 M | Descent: 788 M | Max Altitude: 2,537 M

Our day begins with a one hour private van transfer to La Fouley. We skip this section of the traditional route as it follows the roadside and would require adding an extra day to the itinerary. From La Fouley, we set off through wide open pastures with clear views toward the Grand Col Ferret, the high mountain pass that marks the border between Switzerland and Italy.

As we climb, the pointed summit of Mont Dolent rises above the pass, marking the only peak shared by France, Switzerland and Italy. Behind us, the Swiss Italian summit of Grand Combin dominates the horizon, while ahead the dramatic walls of the Italian side of Mont Blanc begin to appear. This is one of the most memorable panoramic transitions on the Tour du Mont Blanc.

The descent from the col is steep in places but manageable at a steady pace. As we drop into Italy, the landscape changes and the language shifts from bonjour to buongiorno. At the base of the descent, a small Italian refuge offers our first espresso on the Italian side of the TMB.

We follow the trail for another hour before taking a short local bus ride to Courmayeur. Our hotel in the heart of this stylish mountain town is a welcome treat after three full days of trekking. The afternoon is a chance to rest, explore, and enjoy the coffee, gelato and Aperol spritzes Courmayeur is known for. Dinner is hosted by your LHO Team Leader and guide at a local Italian restaurant.

DAY 6: THE INCREDIBLE VAL VENY

Distance: 14.4 KM | Ascent: 856 M | Descent: 790 M | Max Altitude: 2,516 M

his day is a favourite among our LHO Team Leaders and one of the most scenic stages of the Tour du Mont Blanc. It offers sweeping views of the Italian side of Mont Blanc and brings us through forests, open pastures, mountain streams and glacier fed lakes. After breakfast, we take a short bus ride west and reach the trail quickly, following a rushing river through dense woodland.

As we ascend, the trees thin and the valley opens, revealing the southern slopes of the Mont Blanc massif. The rivers and lakes here are fed directly by glacier melt, creating a landscape that feels both wild and peaceful. We cross wetlands and streams before tackling a steady ascent toward Col de la Seigne, the high mountain pass that marks the border between Italy and France. The climb can feel long, but alternating steep and flatter sections make the rhythm comfortable. If the weather allows, we enjoy a picnic at the pass, though it can be windy at the top.

On descent, buongiorno shifts back to bonjour as we re enter France. The trail leads us into the Beaufort region, known for its cheese and wide open alpine valleys. The long winding descent offers views that many consider among the best on the entire Tour du Mont Blanc. At the valley floor, we follow a gentle farming road to a small bus stop and take a short ride to Les Chapieux, our home for the night.

Les Chapieux is a remote hamlet with limited services and no mobile phone coverage, so it is best to inform loved ones ahead of time. Our Base Camp team remains reachable if needed throughout the stay.

DAY 7: CLOSING THE CIRCLE

Distance: 13.8 KM | Ascent: 709 M | Descent: 1297 M | Max Altitude: 2,408 M

After breakfast, we rejoin the trail and begin our ascent toward Col de la Croix du Bonhomme. This is our final major climb of the Tour du Mont Blanc, beginning just outside the hut and rising steadily toward the pass that connects the Beaufortain region with Les Contamines. The col marks the westernmost point of the Mont Blanc massif, and from here we begin moving eastward, gradually looping back in the direction of our starting point.

The trail opens into wide alpine fields with distant views of the Vanoise massif. At the top, we pause at a mountain refuge to enjoy coffee and our packed lunch before continuing along a rocky balcony path. The descent leads into thick alpine forest, where the trail crosses a deep gorge with rushing water echoing below.

As we approach the valley, the trail brings us directly to the historic church of Notre Dame de la Gorge, a landmark often described as one of the most picturesque points on the French section of the TMB. From here, a short transfer brings us back to Chamonix. Warm showers, great food and time to explore the town await after a rewarding final day on the trail.

In the evening, we gather for a celebratory team dinner hosted by your LHO Team Leader. The first round of drinks is on us as we close the journey together.

DAY 8: AU REVOIR!

Our final day together is dedicated to airport transfers and goodbyes. Breakfast is included at the hotel, and we ask all community members to provide accurate departure details when completing the team details form. This helps ensure a smooth and timely journey back to Geneva airport.

Our shared transfers operate for flights departing between 9:30 am and 11:00 pm. If your flight falls outside these hours, we can arrange a private transfer at an additional cost. If your travel plans change, please inform your LHO Team Leader as early as possible so the appropriate arrangements can be made.

As the journey comes to a close and you begin your travel home, many of our community members enjoy reflecting on the full circuit and learning more about the history, culture and landscapes they experienced. For a deeper look at the route and its highlights, you can explore our Definitive Guide to Trekking the Tour du Mont Blanc, a helpful companion for remembering every stage of this iconic Alpine adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Tour du Mont Blanc?

The Tour du Mont Blanc, often called the TMB, is one of the world’s most famous long distance treks. It circles the entire Mont Blanc Massif through France, Switzerland and Italy, covering about 170 kilometers of alpine terrain. The route features high mountain passes, panoramic ridgelines, glacier-fed valleys and traditional villages, making it a bucket list experience for hikers worldwide.

At Life Happens Outdoors, we offer a curated version of the Tour du Mont Blanc that highlights the most spectacular and rewarding sections of the trail. Our itinerary combines iconic viewpoints, authentic mountain huts and rich cultural moments across all three countries. If you want a full breakdown of the route, terrain and stages, our Definitive Guide to Trekking the Tour du Mont Blanc provides an in depth overview.

Are there Luggage Transfer Services on the Tour du Mont Blanc?

Yes, luggage transfer is available on the Tour du Mont Blanc, and it is one of the most useful services for trekkers. On Life Happens Outdoors trips, we include reliable hut to hut baggage transfer for bags up to ten kilograms, using a forty litre duffel provided by our team. This allows you to enjoy the full TMB experience without carrying a heavy pack across long ascents and descents.

Each day, you hike with only a light backpack containing essentials such as water, snacks, layers and your packed lunch. This setup makes the Tour du Mont Blanc trek significantly more comfortable and lets you focus on the scenery, the terrain and the flow of the journey rather than the weight on your back.

When is the best time to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc?

The best time to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc is from late June to mid September. Each part of the season offers something different. Late June has quieter trails and occasional snow on higher passes. July and August provide the warmest and most stable weather, though they also bring the most hikers. Early to mid September is cooler and calmer, with clear skies and fewer crowds across France, Italy and Switzerland.

All periods deliver spectacular views, but the right choice depends on your preferences for temperature, trail traffic and conditions. Our Definitive Guide to Trekking the Tour du Mont Blanc offers a detailed month by month breakdown to help you choose the ideal time.

How long is the Tour du Mont Blanc?

The full Tour du Mont Blanc is roughly one hundred and seventy kilometres, depending on the route variations chosen in France, Italy and Switzerland. Most self guided trekkers complete the classic circuit in ten to twelve days. At Life Happens Outdoors, our curated itinerary covers around one hundred kilometres over six trekking days, focusing on the most scenic and meaningful sections of the TMB. We skip road heavy or less rewarding segments to create a smoother flow while still experiencing the iconic mountain passes, alpine valleys and high level trails that define the route.

No matter the distance you cover, the Tour du Mont Blanc remains one of the most unforgettable multi day treks in the Alps.

How hard is the Tour du Mont Blanc?

The Tour du Mont Blanc is considered a moderately challenging trek, with long days on varied alpine terrain and steady ascents and descents. The overall difficulty depends on how you choose to experience it. With Life Happens Outdoors, the challenge is balanced and accessible thanks to expert guiding, thoughtfully paced days, comfortable accommodation and luggage transfer. This allows you to focus on the trail rather than navigation or carrying heavy gear.

More rugged versions of the Tour du Mont Blanc, such as camping or self supported itineraries, are significantly harder and require full packs, solo route finding and daily camp setup. Regardless of the style you choose, the TMB remains a rewarding physical challenge through some of the most spectacular landscapes in the Alps.

Can I skip parts of the trail and still catch up with the group on the Tour du Mont Blanc?

Yes, it is possible to skip certain sections of the Tour du Mont Blanc and rejoin the group later. On Life Happens Outdoors trips, our accommodations are intentionally chosen in villages or areas with transport access, making it easier to step off the trail when needed. Depending on the location, you can use local buses, cable cars, trains or taxis to link back with the group.

Any additional transport costs are at your own expense, and if the Mont Blanc Tunnel is closed, alternative routes may be significantly more expensive. Your LHO Team Leader assists with logistics to ensure your Tour du Mont Blanc remains flexible, whether you complete every section or adjust the journey based on how you feel.

How should i train for the Tour du Mont Blanc?

Training for the Tour du Mont Blanc focuses on building endurance, leg strength and confidence on varied terrain. The most effective preparation is consistent uphill and downhill hiking, ideally with a backpack, to simulate daily stages of the TMB. Cardio work such as running, cycling or swimming improves stamina for long days on the trail, while strength exercises including squats, step ups and lunges help protect your knees during sustained descents.

Training outdoors in mixed weather conditions is especially valuable, as it prepares you for the changing environments across France, Italy and Switzerland. With steady preparation, you will arrive ready to enjoy the full Tour du Mont Blanc experience. For a deeper breakdown of fitness and pacing, our Definitive Guide to Trekking the Tour du Mont Blanc offers additional training insights.

How long does it take to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc?

The time it takes to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc depends on the route and style you choose. The full classic circuit is about one hundred and seventy kilometres and usually takes ten to twelve days to complete. Some self guided versions with rest days or side trails can extend to fourteen days or more.

At Life Happens Outdoors, our Tour du Mont Blanc experience includes six days of trekking and covers about one hundred kilometres. This curated route highlights the most scenic and meaningful sections of the TMB while avoiding long detours or road heavy paths. It offers all the beauty and challenge of the Tour du Mont Blanc in a well paced and efficient format.

Whatever duration you choose, trekking the Tour du Mont Blanc is an unforgettable journey through the alpine landscapes of France, Italy and Switzerland.

Where does the Tour du Mont Blanc start?

The traditional starting point of the Tour du Mont Blanc is Les Houches in the Chamonix Valley, which is where Life Happens Outdoors begins our trek. Les Houches has long been considered the classic gateway to the TMB, offering immediate access to the first major ascent and a smooth introduction to the route.

Because the Tour du Mont Blanc is a loop, you can technically begin anywhere along the trail, and many trekkers choose to start in central Chamonix for easier access, accommodation options and transport links. Your starting point depends on your itinerary and your preferred flow, but Les Houches remains the most recognised and historically established place to begin the full Tour du Mont Blanc circuit.

Why does Life Happens Outdoors trek the Tour du Mont Blanc clockwise?

Life Happens Outdoors completes the Tour du Mont Blanc clockwise because it allows for a smoother progression in terrain and difficulty. Beginning gently in the Aiguilles Rouges and building gradually toward the higher Italian and French passes helps manage fatigue and improves overall flow. The clockwise direction also offers clearer spacing between ascents and descents, making the route more efficient without reducing the distance or experience. It is the ideal structure for an eight day itinerary that prioritises enjoyment, safety and sustained energy.

For a full comparison of both directions check out our Definitive Guide to Trekking the Tour du Mont Blanc.

What sections of the Tour du Mont Blanc does the LHO itinerary cover?

Our itinerary covers all of the most scenic and meaningful sections of the Tour du Mont Blanc, including Lac Blanc, the Aiguilles Rouges balcony trail, Col du Balme, Bovine, Champex Lac, Grand Col Ferret, Val Ferret, Col de la Seigne and Col de la Croix de Bonhomme. We skip a few road heavy or less rewarding segments so the trip remains focused on high quality mountain terrain, panoramic passes and culturally rich areas of France, Italy and Switzerland.

What is the daily distance and elevation gain on the LHO Tour du Mont Blanc?

Daily distances typically range from nine to fourteen kilometres, depending on the stage. Elevation gain varies between roughly seven hundred and one thousand metres on most trekking days. The itinerary is designed to offer strong but manageable days that highlight the most impressive viewpoints and passes while allowing time for breaks, photography and a comfortable pace.

How fit do I need to be for the LHO Tour du Mont Blanc?

A good level of trekking fitness is required for the LHO Tour du Mont Blanc. You should be comfortable hiking for several hours a day on uneven terrain with sustained ascents and descents. If you can walk uphill for one to two hours without extended breaks and complete back to back active days, you are well prepared. Training hikes with elevation gain are the best preparation.

Do I need previous trekking experience to join the LHO TMB?

Previous trekking experience is helpful but not essential. Many community members complete the LHO Tour du Mont Blanc as their first multi day trek. Our AMM and IFMGA guides set a supportive pace, help with technique and ensure the route remains accessible and enjoyable. Good fitness and a positive mindset matter more than prior long distance trekking experience.

Is September a good time to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc?

Yes, September is one of the best months for the Tour du Mont Blanc. Trails are quieter, temperatures are cooler and visibility is often excellent. Mountain huts are still open, and the changing colours add beauty to the landscape. It is an ideal time for those who prefer stable weather with fewer crowds.

For a full month by month breakdown of how the trail might differ, check out our Definitive Guide to Trekking the Tour du Mont Blanc.

What qualifications do LHO guides have for the TMB?

Life Happens Outdoors works with AMM certified (Accompagnateur en Moyenne Montagne) mountain leaders and IFMGA certified guides. These are the official professional qualifications for guiding in the Alps. Our guides bring extensive experience in mountain safety, navigation, group management and the varied terrain of the Tour du Mont Blanc.

What are the mountain huts like on the LHO Tour du Mont Blanc?

Mountain huts on the LHO route are comfortable and welcoming, offering shared dormitory style rooms, hearty meals and a warm social atmosphere. They provide a genuine alpine experience with stunning views right from the doorstep. Our selection balances comfort with authenticity, ensuring restful nights throughout the trek.

Do TMB huts have showers and electricity?

Many mountain huts on the Tour du Mont Blanc offer hot showers and limited electricity for charging small devices, though availability can vary depending on the refuge and the season. To ensure consistent comfort, the Life Happens Outdoors itinerary includes hotel nights in Chamonix, Argentiere and Courmayeur, spaced throughout the trek. This means you always have access to full showers, private facilities and reliable charging at least every other night, even when staying in high mountain refuges on the trail.

Can vegetarian, vegan, or dietary needs be accommodated on the TMB?

Yes, most huts can accommodate dietary needs including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free meals when requested in advance. Life Happens Outdoors manages all dietary communication with hut staff, and our guides ensure your needs are met throughout the trek. Options may be simpler in remote locations but are always sufficient for a full day of trekking.

What is included in the LHO TMB experience?

The LHO Tour du Mont Blanc includes certified guides, a dedicated team leader and photographer, hotel nights in Chamonix, Argentiere and Courmayeur, selected mountain huts, all meals, all cable car and train passes within the itinerary, luggage transfer up to ten kilograms, a forty litre duffel, airport transfers, all local transportation, fitness and nutrition guides, gear support and full LHO Base Camp assistance. It is an all inclusive trek designed for a seamless, supported experience.

Why choose a guided Tour du Mont Blanc instead of a self guided trek?

A guided Tour du Mont Blanc removes the complexities of navigation, bookings, logistics and daily planning. With Life Happens Outdoors, you benefit from experienced guides, curated routes, reliable luggage transfer, hand picked accommodation and a supportive community environment. This allows you to focus fully on the scenery, the journey and the enjoyment of each day rather than the logistics.

Dive deeper into the pros and cons of guided or self-guided Tour du Mont Blanc treks in our Definitive Guide to Trekking the Tour du Mont Blanc.

What is the group size on the LHO TMB?

Group sizes are deliberately kept small to maintain safety, pacing and connection. Most LHO Tour du Mont Blanc groups range from ten to twelve community members, supported by a dedicated team leader and certified guide.

Can beginners join the LHO Tour du Mont Blanc?

Yes, beginners with good fitness can join the LHO Tour du Mont Blanc. Our itinerary is designed to be challenging yet achievable, with expert guidance, comfortable accommodation and luggage transfer to lighten the load. Many community members choose the TMB as their first multi day trek, and our team ensures they are supported every step of the way.

When the experience includes camping we provide the tents, sleeping mats, common dining tents, camping chairs and camping tables. The only thing you’ll need to get is a sleeping bag and an optional camping pillow. Please refer to the LHO gear list for more information specific to the trip you’re on. Mountain Lodges are usually well equipped, providing beds with duvets and pillows. They also include a common restaurant area. Some lodges require a sleeping liner.
