Ah, the great outdoors! Although there are no shortages of checkered shits and questionable body odors, going on an adventure isn’t just for the rugged explorer anymore. That may have something to do with the fact that Millennials and GenZers are catching on to an ancient and hidden mystery buried in 100,000 years of human existence: Spending time outside, the real outside, can actually be good for your mental health. Yes, I’m serious! So, what are these great benefits that one can’t achieve by popping a pill and swiping right? Here are just a few:

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Spending time in the outdoors reduces stress and anxiety. Who needs a therapist when you have trees and grass? Studies have shown that spending time in nature can help to reduce stress and anxiety levels. Just don’t get lost on your nature walk or your stress levels will skyrocket.

Boosts Mood and Happiness

The great outdoors is like a natural mood booster. The release of endorphins during physical activity can help to create a sense of euphoria and promote a positive outlook on life. And if you’re lucky, you might even see a cute little marmot. Instant happiness!

Promotes Mindfulness

Yes the generational buzz word that we’ve all had to explain to the rolling eyes of our parents. Nature is the perfect place to practice mindfulness. When surrounded by trees and chirping birds, it’s easier to focus on the present moment and let go of distracting thoughts. Sometimes nature too will throw the occasion distraction our way to test us. The rule of thumb is that if starts to chase you or itch you then it’s not a test. Run!
