MONT BLANC SUMMIT COURSE

Outrageous France

Mont Blanc Summit Course

EXPERIENCE THE BIRTHPLACE OF MOUNTAINEERING AND THE SUMMIT THAT INSPIRED IT ALL.

Yes, it’s gorgeous. Yes, it’s the highest summit in the Alps and yes, the Mont Blanc is commonly a first step for many of us seeking to experience the vast world of high-altitude alpinism. Actually, it has become a rite of passage for trekkers readying themselves for the more technical aspects of mountains. The combination of challenging terrain, comfortable mountain huts and an exposure to a diversity of skills and environments make this experience a great overview of the many possibilities and trajectories that we can choose to explore from here. The cherry on the cake is the town of Chamonix, where we stay during this adventure. It’s epic!

Itinerary

This adventure sets the foundation for all mountaineering trajectories because it provides a taste of all the possibilities that alpinism has to offer. There’s a sharp learning curve so a good level of physical fitness, with a focus on cardio and endurance, will enable you to benefit the most from our time together and enable you to truly enjoy climbing the Mont Blanc.

DAY 1: ARRIVING TO CHAMONIX

Day 1 is arrival day. If you require pick-ups from Geneva airport please let us know otherwise we’ll meet you at the hotel or Chamonix central train station. Check-in starts at 3 pm but we can store our bags at the hotel and roam around if we arrive early. We highly recommend arriving early in order to rent gear. The gear stores close at 7 pm. A team dinner and briefing will take place at 7:30 pm with your team leaders and mountain guides at the Hotel.

DAY 2: TRAINING

Our first day together will start early in the morning. We’ll depart from the hotel and head through the Mont Blanc tunnel to Courmayeur. From there we’ll take the skyway cable to Punta Hellbronner. After checking at the Torino hut we’ll start our training on the glacier. Training will consist of crampon techniques, the use of the ice axe, and how to manipulate climbing robes. Dinner and overnight will be at the Torino hut.

DAY 3: MARBREES TRAVERSE

On our second day at altitude, we’ll be getting an early start to traverse the Aigulles Marbrees. This is perfect training for the Mont Blanc as it includes glacier travel, ridge climbing, and an opportunity to get used to exposure at altitude. Once done, we’ll return to Torino hut for a second night that will maximize our acclimatization.

DAY 4: RETURN TO CHAMONIX

After breakfast we’ll depart the Torino hut and descend the Skyway to Courmayeur and then to Chamonix. This day will be an opportunity to rest and recover at the hotel in Chamonix.

DAY 5: THEORY AND ROPES

Our fourth day is dedicated to rope techniques and mountain theory. We’ll also head down to the local crag to practice some climbing with our big mountain boots. This is a great way to gain much needed confidence on a rock for the upcoming section between the Tete Rousse and Gouter huts when we head to the Mont Blanc. We will not physically push ourselves too much on this day in order to recover for our Mont Blanc summit window.

DAY 6: DEPARTING FOR THE MONT BLANC

We’ll start our day late at around midday. This gives everyone the chance to rest fully and ready themselves for the big ascent. We’ll first catch the Bellevue cable not far from our hotel before taking the mountain train to Nid d’Aigle. From there we begin our 3 hour trek to the Tete Rousse hut/base camp. This is just a sustained inclined trek and will not require the use of any technical gear. There is a small glacier just outside the hut that we’ll need to cross. The guides will determine if the gear is needed to cross it based on the conditions on the day. Once we arrive, the guides and team leaders will determine the best course of action to give the team the highest possible chance of reaching the summit.

DAY 7: SUMMIT WINDOW 1

The team will move from Tete Rousse to the Gouter Hut at 3,812 meters. This should take no more than 3 hours. An early morning move is desirable to avoid the warming of the couloir. It is possible to push directly to the summit and return to the Gouter hut for the evening. Alternatively, it may be desirable to remain at the Gouter hut and push for the summit early the following morning.

DAY 8: SUMMIT WINDOW 2

If the team pushed for the summit on the previous day then this day will be dedicated only to descending the mountain. We usually arrive around 11 am. If the summit is still ahead of us then we will make an early departure from the hut to the summit with the aim of returning to Chamonix on the same day. A team dinner will be held at 6:30 pm with the guides in Chamonix.

DAY 9: AU REVOIR!

Our final day together will be dedicated to airport transfers and farewells. Breakfast is included on the day. Please make sure that you provide us with your departure details before the first day of the trip so that arrangements can be made.

A completely transformative experience both mentally and physically!! Highly recommended for anyone looking to push the limits even if it ends in a few tears 😂😂😂

I don’t know where to begin, but this trip has been one of the best life experiences I have had. The organization was on point, and I never felt worried about anything as Rami went above and beyond to accommodate all of us. When I read that there will be “professional photos taken” I expected 1-2 photos taken. However, I received tons of beautiful photos taken by Rami. He basically jumped around from team to team to make sure all of our photos were taken, and that ways a lot. The program itself has a great build up, which I really appreciated. I enjoyed the training as much as the journey to the summit of Mont Blanc. The guides were wonderful. My favorite day was the day we pushed to the summit, the feeling of accomplishment is indescribable. If you are thinking of signing up for this trip, do not think twice, you’ll have the time of your life! This will definitely not be my last trip with LHO

Ahmed Al Monsouri

From the moment I landed in Geneva till the last hour of the trip, everything was perfect. Going to the Alps had been a dream of mine for a long time, and LHO made it one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Rami and Ghida greeted us with utmost generosity, and the team bonded with each other in no time! Everything ranging from accommodation to transportation was carefully planned and seamlessly executed. The guides Philip and Fred were very professional and played a big part in our success. I can go on for hours talking about my experience, but to sum it up, I learnt that it’s all about the journey rather than the summit. Learning from professionals like Rami, Fred and Philip was a real blessing as an 18 year old going into the mountaineering world. The team spirit and mentality during this climb truly reflects the real meaning of mountaineering. If you’re looking to get a taste of alpinism, don’t think twice, go with LHO. The experiences and memories will stay with you for a long long time!

I’ve known members of the LHO community since the company was founded and have been wanting to join and be part of that community ever since. And after a long wait, my first and most recent trip with LHO has been to summit the Mont Blanc. Though I’ve hiked several mountains this has been my first alpine climbing experience and definitely not the last one. It has been one full of learnings, exploring and testing my limits on many levels. The team were very accommodating to our needs ensuring that everything ran smoothly including the logistics of the whole trip. I also like the fact that they consider every person a part of the LHO community once you are onboard. I do hope to experience and be part of more adventures in the future!!

Would it be too hot on summit day to use ski pants or just thin waterproof pants?

Removable layers are generally recommended for summer mountaineering in the Alps. Ski pants may be too thick on warmer days. It's best to bring a thermal base layer, mountaineering pants and a waterproof or Gortex layer as three separate and detachable pants.
