Itinerary

A great trail for first-timers and experienced trekkers a like. The combination of challenging daily trails, beautiful guest houses and phenomenal food creates an ambiance of balance and excitement that makes this adventure accessible to everyone willing to give it a try.

DAY 1: ARRIVING TO LEBANON

We’ll be received at Beirut Rafik Hariri International Airport by our LHO team leader and shuttled to Ehden, the northernmost village and starting point of our trail. For those of us who arrive early, we’ll have the opportunity to explore the historic town with its small streets and cafes. In the evening we’ll be hosting a welcome dinner at a trendy Ehden restaurant to introduce the team to each other and to explore the first element of our adventure: the food! A gear check will be conducted later in the evening to make sure that everyone has whatever they need for the days ahead.

DAY 2: THE BIBLICAL VALLEY OF QADISHA

After breakfast, we’ll load up our luggage in our transport, throw our backpacks on and start walking down into the deep Qadisha valley. The first day is a big day but it’s mostly downhill and designed to warm us up and get us into the swing of things. The trail leads down the valley to the riverside where we’ll pass three monasteries and a hermitage. Lunch will be a picnic by the river. The day ends with a short drive from the valley floor up to the village of Bsharre, home-town of the late Lebanese poet Gibran Khalil Gibran. Dinner will be at our accommodation in Bsharre.

DAY 3: FROM CEDARS TO CEDARS

The morning starts with an uphill portion to a grove of the oldest cedar forest in the country known as the Cedars of God. We’ll traverse through the forest that stands against the backdrop of Lebanon’s highest snow- covered summits. From there, we’ll jump into our transport for a short drive to the trail head of the Tannourine Cedar forest. From there, we’ll enter the deeper but younger forest as we descend into the Tannourine valley, Lebanon’s most jagged region. The trail ends at the Baatara sinkhole, one of the country’s natural wonders. We’ll be sleeping at a nearby guesthouse for the evening.

DAY 4: BASKINTA TO FALLOUGHA

After breakfast we’ll be jumping into our transport for a drive to Baskinta. The change in scenery is dramatic as we go from cedar forests to pine forests known locally as “Snaoubar”. The trail from Baskinta takes us along sharp cliffs and past historic megalithic ruins. Lunch will be at a Lebanese “furren” or street food vendor in the beautiful town of Mtein. From there, it’s a descent down to the valley floor before ascending to Fallougha, passing its famous water pools. Our accommodation for the night is the Soha Village overlooking the resort town of Hammana.

DAY 5: FALLOUGHA TO MAASER

After breakfast we jump into our transport for a short ride to the Ain Zhalta gate of the Chouf Biosphere Reserve. This is the start of the southernmost cedar forest in the world and largest cedar reserve in Lebanon. We’ll begin with an ascent to the Ain Zhalta summit. From this point it is possible to see the entire country! The trail continues along the mountain top to the Barouk cedar forest before traversing onwards to the Maaser forest. Lunch will be a picnic on the trail. The night is spent in the picturesque village of Maaser.

DAY 6 & 7: THE FINAL STRETCH

Our last trekking day together will take us through another Snaoubar forest as we approach the beautiful town of Niha. From there, we’ll ascend the mountain to Nabi Ayoub, a holy place revered by the secretive Druze religious sect. After a brief visit, we’ll continue on to Niha Fort where Fakhreddine, a Lebanese revolutionary, led an uprising against the Ottoman empire. The final section of our trail takes us down to the town of Jezzine, the end of our trail and where our final team dinner awaits. The last day is reserved for airport shuttles. Breakfast is included on the day.
