MT. MERU EXPEDITION

Challenging Tanzania

Mt. Meru Expedition

WALK WITH GIRAFFES, WILDEBEEST AND ZEBRAS TO THE TOP OF AFRICA'S WILDEST MOUNTAIN.

Summiting Meru is a spectacle beyond just a trekking expedition. What’s particularly unique about this mountain is that, unlike Kilimanjaro, wild animals of the nearby national parks have settled on these hills and spotting herds along the trail is very much part of this experience. It is also still an active, albeit dormant, volcano. These two elements are what have earned Meru the title of the “Wild Stratovolcano.”

1

Tanzania’s wildest mountain because of the free-roaming animals and rugged natural environment.

2

A great expedition getaway for those of us who are time-limited.

3

The summit ridge is its own achievement and considered more challenging than its sister mountain Kilimanjaro.

Itinerary

The perfect entry-level expedition experience for those of us who’d like to get a real taste of high-altitude trekking. Meru is a spectacular and unique adventure in its own right and is also ideal preparation for those of us seeking to attempt Kilimanjaro in the future.

DAY 1: ARRIVING TO MOSHI

We’ll be received at the airport and transferred to the hotel by the LHO team leader. Early arrivals can explore the vibrant town of Moshi at the foot of Kilimanjaro. We highly recommend the Union Coffee Shop in town for those of us who like great coffee and ever better pies. A team briefing and dinner will be held for everyone on our first night together at a trendy Moshi restaurant. This will be the first opportunity for everyone to get to know each other and hear the details about the days to come. Bag checks will be conducted upon returning to the hotel.

DAY 2: MIRIAKAMBA HUT (2,500 M)

We’ll depart from the hotel at 8:00 am in the direction of the Momella gate. The drive takes about one hour and a half. Once at the gate we’ll perform the check-in procedures. This can take a while. Because Meru is inside a wider national park with the potential for encounters with wild animals, we will be escorted by an armed park ranger for this section of the trail. It is possible to come across warthogs, bushbucks, cape buffaloes and even giraffes. The highlight of our day is definitely the views on Kilimanjaro and the Momella lakes. Our night will be spent at Miriakamba Hut.

DAY 3: SADDLE HUT (3,500 M)

Day two on the trail is a steep one as we will be ascending 1,000 vertical meters to the Saddle Hut. After breakfast, we’ll pack up our gear and start the slow-paced ascent passing the ash cone of little Meru, the sister summit of Meru, with views on the Meru Crater. This is another day for animal spotting as well so keep your eyes peeled for buffaloes and monkeys! Our day is usually short and we expect to arrive at the Saddle Hut in time for a hot lunch. Conditions permitting, we may do a short acclimatization hike in the area as well.

DAY 4: SOCIALIST PEAK (4,562 M)

We’ll be waking up just after midnight to make our way to the summit. The aim is to reach the top for sunrise although conditions will dictate our pace. The summit trail is characterized by gravel paths and rocky ridges. Once at the top, we’ll take our pictures, celebrate our achievement and then begin our direct descent to the Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m), stopping at the Saddle Hut to collect our gear and have a snack.

DAY 5: MOMELLA GATE

Our last day on the mountain will be a direct descent to the Momella gate. Once we’ve checked out, we’ll be taken to our hotel in Arusha to freshen up and grab some lunch. We’ll have plenty of free time to wonder around, buy souvenirs from the town and sample the many coffee shops that Arusha is famous for. We’ll also bid farewell to our summit team with a dinner altogether.

DAY 6: HAKUNA MATATA

Our last day together is dedicated to airport transfers. Breakfast is included on this day. Please be sure to inform your LHO team leader about your departure plans ahead of time so that arrangements can be made.

What's the toilet situation?

There are fixed toilets at the mountain huts and at different points on the trail. The toilets are relatively well maintained. We don't advise anyone to poop in nature because we want to preserve the environment, especially in the higher altitude locations where poop doesn't disappear with rain, nor gets absorbed by the soil. It freezes and stays there!

Where does the drinking water come from?

Is there a need to get a purifier for drinking or tablets that purify the water?"

Drinking water is sourced from local springs on the mountain then boiled and sanitized with special tablets to ensure it's safe to drink. You will have unlimited treated water refills throughout the expedition.

There's no way to climb Meru and not experience all the seasons at some point. Even during the dry season, it will still rain in the rainforest because of humidity clouds that form at the base of the mountain and get pushed up to higher altitude by midday. We'll also feel warmer weather and may even find ourselves in shorts and t-shirts as high up as summit base camp (4,000m). Your gear list has everything you need in order to make sure you're able to go through all the different weather conditions and enjoy every aspect of this beautiful mountain.
